am very new to the site. and very new to gardening. in april moved into a house with a garden and a vegtable patch so thought i would give it a go my late mother was brilliant in her garden so i thought why not

everything has gone to pot apart from two things

spring onions grew ok
and white onion grew ok but not massive by any means

the bad stuff was two rows of potatoes a blue type that grew like mad i earthed up etc etc but when i pulled them nthe has blisters all over them and were a crap size

then carrots that grew about two inches then and were like cork screws all twisted and stuff.

radishs from this magazine and the lettuce grew ok put it on the patch and was devoured by bloody caterpillers and root fly.

so i didnt bother much after that

but today brought a scotch bonnet plant to go on the window sil and wanna start again in the garden for fresh

any help would be appreciated

everything i have tried has gone to pot

I had a lot of trouble with caterpillars this year. Had to compost my whole brassica patch. It's my first year growing too and have had limited success too, but hey, there's always next year.

Yeah that's what I thought more planning more preparing maybe different if I had moved into the house in march

Do you have raised bed allotment etc

Hi Jimpanzee, welcome to the Vine. I live in Suffolk too, and it's been so dry this year that lots of things haven't grown too well. Better luck next year. How long has your veg patch been a veg patch, and what is the soil like? Sounds as if it could do with enriching with compost or manure.

I do advise to cover the patch with fleece to avoid butterflies laying their eggs on brassica type vegetables

Think it has been a veg patch for about 2 and half years
it's completely empty now

Me too! Growing veg is just 1 big lesson. Not everything always works out...

Do you have raised bed allotment etc

I've dedicated half my back garden to growing my fruit and veg rather than getting an allotment. I do it because I love cooking, so I can nip out of the back door and pull my dinner up as and when I want it. It also removed half my lawn so saves time on mowing
