  • Hello from Cornwall

    Hi everyone,

I found this site a short while ago and think it's amazing - such a wealth of ideas, advice and humour!

Despite too many years of pottering around in gardens I still consider myself a very novice gardener with a few successes and an awful lot of disasters...

At the moment, bindweed from a neighbour's thick hedge is driving me to distraction (not their fault, I hasten to say) and I'd love some tips on saving seeds - especially whether you can hang on to broad and runner bean seeds,

    Many thanks for reading this

Peas and beans are the easiest of seeds to save. The problem is they readily cross-pollinate with each other. French beans tend to come more true.

Welcome Grannymem, having such a lovely climate down there (although it may not always seem like it) you will be able to try a lot more than some people.

Welcome to the Vine grannymem. Whereabouts in Cornwall are you? I was born in Plymouth but now exiled to East Anglia. BTW, you can put your location on your profile, this way Cornwall will show up on all your posts - makes it easier for the rest of us to give advice.

Thanks for all the welcome messages - and to you, Rusty Lady(!) - for your advice. I think I've added to my profile - still getting the hang of this site - but I live in Truro (typical long, narrow town garden with quite a bit of shade), am just beginning to find more time to do a bit of gardening, and recently acquired a greenhouse.
I know I shall get inspiration from all you experienced and practical gardeners -I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

I did wonder - need to sort out the bindweed and 'ordinary' veg before I tackle the rice, I think...

Have they found those Gardens in Helligan yet?

Welcome aboard grannymem. I think saving F1 seeds is a bit iffy, best to go for non-F1 (whatever non-F1 are called if not non-F1...).

We did find them - just nearly lost them again...

All this talk about F1 is confusing - shall I just buy another packet of seeds? Drekkly...
