  • Hello

    Hi everyone, newbie here.

My name is Andy and i've been a professional gardener for the past 28 years. I joined Brighton parks and gardens at 15 years old as an apprentice and spent 4 years working in all the parks and areas in Brighton doing everything from nurserywork to working on golf courses whilst doing all my City and guilds at Plumpton AC.

Once the apprenticeship had finnished, i moved to the City's huge municiple nursery where i looked after an amaizing array of glasshouse crops growing everything from standard fuchsias to cyclamen and coleus and eventually ending up looking after the stunning palm house.....which was heaven.

Unfortunately, the nursery almost shut due to massive cutbacks and i left the council to go and work with Rentokil tropical plants where i was responsible for intalling and maintaining huge tropical landscapes in some of the countries top atriums, shopping centres and private houses based in central London and the home counties.

I loved the work but hated the company so after 5 years, i eventually moved back to an up and coming Brighton and Hove city parks dept where i remain to this day as garden manager to a massive rock garden right on the A23 at the entrance to Brighton opposite Preston Park.

I love gardening at home and despite a small garden, i still make room for my first love of growing exotics. However next year will see a big reduction of the exotics and a move over to tub grown veg (which i know absolutely nothing about).

I am married with an 11 year old daughter Katie. We live in Lewes, East Sussex with our loopy Springer Spaniel Murphy, a couple of cats, 2 tropical fish tanks and a 3,000 gallon koi pond.

So hopefully i can bring something to your forum as well as learning lots.

    Andy

I'm joining in a bit late here but 'welcome' anyway.
I've spent many a happy hour at Brighton Rock Gardens - (never for the 'nocturnals', tho Two Sheds !!).
Is the council nursery place that you mention, the one at Stanmer? Their end of season sell off used to be brilliant but the place was closed last time I went.
You'll enjoy it on the vine, Mate and I'll even forgive you for being a Hammers fan - you can't say fairer than that!
