  • Hi There

Hello.Yet another Graham. I,m from gods own country in Derbyshire. My first year as allotment holder and vegetable grower. I quite suprised my self with the results this last yaer. Everything did really well except potatoes which were a little disapointing with slug damage, only to be expected, what with the weather we have had this year. My own fault really, late in getting my order in for seed potatoes and not being able to get my first choices. Another lesson learnt for next year.

I've grown potatoes twice now and both times I just used a bag that had sprouted in the back of the cupboard. I planted 18 of them this year and harvested 22lbs 8oz from it. Not sure how that would compare to seed potatoes, but I'm pretty happy with the result. They did have a little common scab, but not so much that it would put you off eating them.

Best of luck with next season, welcome to the Vine.

Hi Graham, welcome. Main crop spuds can have slug problems. I only grow earlies (first and second) and this way you avoid blight and much of the slugging. Keep going - there's nothing to touch the flavour of fresh vegetables you've grown yourself.

Hi and welcome to the vine. Loads of helpful grapes here. I am going to focus on second earlies for simular reasons to you as I had great crops from them but poor crops from my mains.

Hi Graham- welcome to the Vine -I second the tips about only growing earlies - in fact a colleague at work puts them in successionally, growing them as first, second and maincrop - presumably to cash in on their relatively quick maturing habit- thus avoiding blight and slugs.

Well, I didn't get any blight this year (never do, not on spuds), but all spuds had scab, yuk.

Only one variety (Druid) out of about 9 had bug damage: and it was millipedes and cockchafers inside the spuds, not slugs.
