  • Hello everyone

I am fairly new to this site. I have posted up a couple of questions about plastic greenhouses.

I live in Runcorn Cheshire and I am a complete novice to veg growing. I intend to have a go a potatoes grown in hessian bags, mixed veggies and a few fruit bushes. I have just bought a dwarf duel apple tree and am very excited about that, so any advice on pruning and feeding etc will be most welcome.

I would like to grow some carrots, is it best to sow them directly or propagate them first?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Elaine and welcome to the vine. You will find a host of answers to your questions - let me start by saying that carrots are best sown directly (and as thinly as you can 'cos the seeds are tiny!)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hello and welcome. I wouldn't propagate carrots first but I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along to help.

Hello and Welcome to the Vine. As Jeanied says, sow your carrot seed directly and as thinly as you can.

Thanks for that Jeanied. I thought as much Which variety would you suggest for a container. It is hessian and stands about 2 ft high and is about 18" round.

          thanks

Hello Elaine and welcome, I like to grow a carrot called "Parmax" its a little round one, T&M £!.99 for 2,500 seeds. You can boil them whole. Not many of mine reach the pan.

                Hello Elaine,

If you have enough room (or containers) sow your carrot seeds little and often. That way you will have fresh new carrots every couple of weeks instead lots all at once.

                  Hi Elaine

Make sure you use nice fine soil and maybe mix with sand if you intend to grow long varieties and don't use any fertilizer.

welcome to you,if sowing carrots, sow direct and mix the seed with some dried sand (i put a trayful in oven for 15min) ,that will help you sow them thinly reducing the amount of seed needed per row..
