here is my take on scare - crows on my allotment , drill holes in handles of old cutlery then thread with wire and attach to large round lid then attach to long cane and there you have your birdie scarer.

How much cutlery would you suggest is used?

As it happens, I've got a couple of carrier bags full of old cutlery after a picking up a badly described realcycle item (I was expecting a few kitchen knives... instead I got a rubbish bread knife, a couple of cheap serrated knives and a whole heap of cutlery).

If I know how much people would need for a scarer I'd be happy to stick a bundle in the post for the cost of P&P if anyone on here wanted to try one.

I do have one issue I have with scarers though... don't they also scare off the beneficial birds that will happily forage for and gorge themselves on slugs and other pests?
