  • Hello

    Hi there,

As a long time reader and first time poster I thought I'd say a quick hello.

I live in East London and after my wife banned me from converting more of the lawn into a veg and fruit bed I'm hoping to get my first allotment in the next few weeks.

Hi and welcome to the Vine from me too Crosby. What sort of things have you been growing at home til now?

I like to have 'long term/ left-to-its-own-devices' stuff at the lottie: onions, carrots, brassicas, sweetcorn, curcubits etc, and have the 'short term/needs-more-attention stuff: Tomatoes, soft fruit, salad crops, herbs etc in the garden where I can pick more regularly. Best of both worlds!

            Thanks for the welcome all.

I've mainly been growing soft fruits, I've listed below what's in the ground at the moment. Also this year I'm trying garlic, shallots and potatoes (swift) and have just started planting seeds for various tomatoes, chillies, bell and sweet peppers, spring onions with then courgettes later in the year. I normally end up with way to many plants and end up swapping some for chicken and duck eggs and giving some to family and neighbours.

            Rhubarb, various (x5)
Gooseberry, various (x6) plus some hardwood cuttings that look like they have taken
            Blackberry
            Blackcurrant (x3)
            Redcurrant
            Blueberry (x3)
            kiwi, wilko special (x2)
            Raspberry canes, summer and autumn
            Goji berry (x2)
            cranberry (x2)

            plus various herbs

I still don't know why my wife thinks I have to much in our garden...

Hi and welcome! I started digging up the massive lawn that came with this house. Now I have an allotment too - and a part of the home veg garden contains a big run with 4 gorgeous red chickens in!

                        welcome
My OH is very happy that I am digging up the back garden in our new house, less grass to deal with in the summer.
Envious of your fruit list, sounds yummy

Hello Crosby and welcome to the madhouse, sorry, 'vine !! Best of luck with the lottie, we're lucky enough to have our own walled garden, so our 'allotment' is 25 x 25 yds!
Hope you have better luck with your Gojis than me, ours grew for a couple of years before just petering out, we're probably too cold up here. Have you tried blueberries? If your cranberries do okay, these should.
