Hi I am Jo and have only last weekend taken over an allotmnent with my husband and friend. I bought seed potatos at the weekend from the allotment shop and they look like the chitting process has started, but I still but them in a egg tray and in a cool(ish) room - in the last couple of days I have noticed the tubers starting to turn green - shall I plant this weekend? And shall I put the second earlies and maincrop in the shed until they are ready to sow??? Help?

Green is fine. You should plant them when your weather is favourable. I think your shed would be too dark: they need to chit in the light.
Check out Tattieman's threads for some excellent spud info.Last edited by Two_Sheds; 24-03-2010, 07:45 AM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Moon planting?
Hi Jojo, welcome. As long as you keep covering the foliage when they pop through until the risk of frost oi over, you can pop them in now.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

easter is traditional time as the weather is usually a bit warmer by then,i dont chit my tatties,i just put them in and let them get on with it,i was told chitting reduces the crop,so i dont bother, mine went in 2/3 weeks ago...welcome to the vine,i hope you enjoy it...

sorry to hijack this thread but I bought some seed potatoes, left them out as they had long thread like roots springing from them (within days of buying the bag) with some tiny chits and then they started to shrivel. The chits haven't really done much either.
Will they be ok to plant still? (I'm growing them in bags this year so at least if they don't grow I can turf them out and stick new ones in.)
Thanks in advance.
