  • Howdo From a Wet Wigan.

It is only this year, where i have decided to grow my own fruit and veg, however, I have issues, My back garden is about 10`x 10`, and heavily waterlogged at the bottom, The ground underneath is mainly pipe bedding and rock, and with a poorly built parking area at the back, all the rainwater run off ends up on my garden, to that end i am going to have a container garden. Now thats out the way. I have planted quite a lot, I have around 35 gardeners delight seedlings doing alright, I have planted 15 naga jolokia, 10 bell pepper and around 10 moneymaker, I dont intend to keep all these I intend to give them to friends, however, I am without a greenhouse since I live in a rented property, and as stated earlier, am without a vast expanse of space in the yard, I can utilise the parking area, and have already placed 1 growhouse on there since it only cost 11 quid (the pvc kind). But when my plants are hardened off (around June) I plan on leaving them out in their own respective large pots. But if we get the usual british summer that is 99 percent rain and 1 percent sun, will this effect the plants at all. I am an absolute novice so please be gentle.

    Cheers

    Cunnie

A very warm welcome to you from Down Under! Our summers are the opposite to yours - 99% scorching sun, 1% rain. What a pity we can't trade the weather as we do with seeds!
Happiness is being with the love of your life. If you can't have that, then an unlimited supply of well-rotted manure is a pretty close second!

Welcome to the vine cunnie, looks like you have already started well, we would all love to control the weather but have just got to put up with it. Cherry toms look really nice in hanging baskets.

Hi Cunnie, welcome to the vine! Those PVC mini greenhouses are fine, but can over heat scorching and drying out your plants, so ventilation is a point to remember. They are also prone to flight so need to be weighed down and secured well. If your location is on the cool side you may need to keep your toms and peppers under cover. I can't grow either outside. It sounds as if you've a lot on the go. Think about how much room you'll actually need to accommodate even half grown plants. It may surprise you. A few mini greenhouses will probably be insufficent, if you can't grow your toms outside.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

I am already considering the room that will be required, the parking area at the back is a real sun trap, the objective, if we are here long enough will be to put a glass greenhouse on it, a rather large one at that, I understand the space issues especially when it comes to potting up, however the good thing is that i can utilise a relatives back yard also. I only plan on keeping around 8 - 10 tomato plants as this will more than suffice for the amount we use, however, the nagas are a tester to see how they do. The only problem will be the heat of the fruit, pushing a million scovilles with any luck so may give them to an indian restaraunt. The peppers i hope do well, as with the paper lanterns. But all in all, I am just looking forward to growing my own produce.

To everyone who said Hi, hi back. Cunnie is a nickname given at school, derived from cunningham, the real name is andy if you prefer.

                    Thanks for your help guys.
