Hello - a bit late...

Hello,

I am just introducing myself even though I have been 'hanging about' for a few weeks and made several posts I am in Coventry.

I am a beginner to gardening. A few years ago I produced some new potatoes, I can 'do' herbs (well the hardier ones) and for the first time have some spring bulbs in the front garden.

Since adopting four bunnies and becoming vegetarian again I have decided that I would like to extend my dabbling to growing some proper veggies in containers (as this is all my garden will allow).

So far I have planted: spring onions, leeks, basil, parsley, rocket, coriander, garlic chives, mixed salad leaves, tomatoes, strawberries, red peppers, dwarf carrots and dwarf beetroot. Also waiting for some new potatoes to finish chitting. Well, no point in doing things by halves eh?!

I dont really know what I am doing but giving it all a go anyway. Went a bid mad on seeds so now feel responsible for trying to grow them all properly!!
Likely to kill them all off at some stage or another.

I think we may share them...they can have all the tops, but if they are tasty they may not get much of the good stuff!!

Hello Helen and welcome to the vine, I too grow most of my veg/herbs/salad in pots, bit you'd be surprised just how much you can grow in such a small area, I've grown runner beans over an arch for the last 3 years with a large container at each end.

Hi and welcome. As you are veggie, have you thought of growing french beans? You can choose varieties with a big seed and leave some on the plant & dry them - great for protein!

Don't worry about killing seeds off! I've just managed to kill off my lettuce seedings by leaving them in the full sun for 5 hrs.
I thought I'd only be out about a couple of hrs- and the sun moved round and completely frazzed them!!

Welcome to the vine Helgalush.........I think the main thing when growing in containers is watering, In my pots I tend to put broken pieces of Oasis to absorb the water, they tend to dry out quicker than in the ground.

Thank you for the suggestion - I havent got any french beans, no. I have a packet of dwarf beans....are they different to french beans? I feel I ought to know but I dont!!! I hopefully have some broad beans seeds coming soon too.

I wouldnt even know how to dry them out, do you just put them on kitchen towel in a cool place for a few days?

I am sure this will be me before long, I am sure I have put my plastic greenhouse in the wrong place but will keep an eye. Hope you can re-grow some lettuce
