Raised beds from decking

Hi I joined a while back but this is my first posting.

We are looking at putting in some raised beds and were thinking of using decking from Wickes. Does anyone know if the preservatives used in decking is ok for veg growing?

Yes, it is fine. I was talking to the Organic Guru about this last week and his research was that tanalised timber [new] was fine for food use.

I built my beds out of decking boards (wouldn't call them raised as such as they're at the height of the old lawn). Their first year's veg' growing last year was pretty successful so I'd agree with Zaz.

If you buy 3x 8ft boards, cut 1 in half and you got a lovely 8ft by 4ft raised bed! Try and keep your raised beds a consistent size as if you make netting cages etc, you can move them around with the bed rotations. And your welcome seconded

Welcome Jacksprat, I grow most of my veg in my raised beds and containers but only since last year. My husband made me raised beds from boards and put insect mesh netting over them on a frame that I can move or keep in place and open up either side. I found that a great help to have. All in all he did a really great job and I can manage a three bed rotation if I want to. I hope to try growing even more this year

Hello Jacksprat and welcome to the vine, love the idea of using decking for your raised bed, a friend used some old scaffolding planks for her's.

Hi jacksprat, another newbie here and growing in raised beds too, we built two of ours out of gravel board and the other is just made from a shop bought raised bed set. They are easy to make though, Ours was about £3 for a 3m length of gravel board, 25cm high, and we used 4 per bed to create a 1.5 x 1m double height (30cm) bed, much cheaper than buying ready made!

Thank you for all your welcomes. The decking is coming on Saturday and I am really excited about getting them set up. Hopefully will be able to get them done over the weekend if I can drag my husband away from sorting out his pond.
