  • Hi from Paisley, Scotland

Hi there. I've been a member of the forums for a couple of years now and have used them fro a bit of advice. But only just came across this section of the boards so thought I'd say hello.

I'm a 30-year-old guy from south Wales originally but moved to Glasgow eight years ago and since moved to Renfrew then Paisley. Grew up on a farm but hated farming and turned into a bit of a hothouse plant in the process. I think I subconsciously linked everything outdoors with farming. But since leaving home I've learned to like the outdoors and am starting my third year of veg gardening. Really enjoy it, find it very rewarding and have managed to progress year-on-year (although lost virtually all my tomatoes to blight last year).

Built one raised bed in my first year, added another at the start of last year and in the middle of building a greenhouse and putting down a patio as well.

Looking at trying to get an allotment but not having too much luck locally. Waiting lists seem quite long.

The forums have been a great help to me so thanks again to everyone for all their advice.

Hello and welcome to the madhouse. Feel free to jump in and swap notes.

I've already posted a sarky comment on your 'Parsnip' thread., no offence intended. The P word is considered unspeakable round here by some folk, as many have trouble growing them. I've been a little rebellious, and have somehow managed to receive several packets of Parsnip seed in the post! Hence my signature and location details.

They're not all mad in here, and I don't think it's contagious!

    Happy growing!

Welcome to the vine Glaw5, and don't worry about our Glutton4, she is usually quite friendly unless there is mention of a parsnip! From your post it sounds like you are mostly into veg growing - what have you got planned for your raised beds this year?
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hi thanks for all the welcomes.

Glutton - sorry didn't know about your parsnip glut! Is it an addiction you've got then?! I planted parsnips for the first time last year and was lucky in that I had a great crop come winter. Tasted great on Christmas Day!

Ginger Ninger - yes had heard quite a few folk had problems with tomato blight last summer. I've gone with the same varities again this year but have also planted a blight-resistant variety that was featured on Gardeners World earlier this year. So hopefully I'll get some tomatoes sometime this year! What varities did you grow?

Jeanied - so far I've got a couple of rows of garlic as well as white, red and spring onions under a homemade cloche just now. Got some broad beans ready to go in. Am growing runners beans, peas, French beans, brussel sprouts, sweetcorn, courgettes, lettuce, butternut squash and leeks indoors to plant out later. Also going to plant carrots and radishes. Aside from the raised bed I've got my tomato plants coming along in my homemade cold frame, some bags with potatoes growing in, as well as a couple each of blueberry, raspberry, and redcurrant bushesplus a few sunflowers dotted about with a couple of sweet peas (first time I've tried them in hope of getting some cut flowers for the house). Have got some Jerusalem artichoke tubers to plant in pots too.

That's the plan anyway although according to the forecast it's going to be down to zero degrees the next couple of nights so have earthed up the potatoes and fastened down the cloche which I'd taken off!

Hi there, I did things the other way round - born in Dundee, lived in Renfrewshire (went to school in Bishopton) and remember shopping in Paisley. Had family in Glasgow. Now live in South West Wales

                      Hi Glaw5,

I'm in Paisley too! Was thrilled to hear from you until you mentioned blight! I'm doing potatoes for the first time this year and figured Paisley might be blight-free.

I don't have an allotment, just a couple of raised beds at the bottom of the garden. My potatoes are in patotao gorw-sacks.

But welcome to the vine, and I look forward to comparing notes.

Hi Glaw5 and welcome. You'll need to move a bit further north to escape the blight, I'm afraid! None here over the past four years, thank goodness. Enjoy being part of the Vine.

Just came across this forum through an internet search, so decided to join up.

I'm a 50 yr old living in South West Wales. As I live in rented property, I didn't want to go digging up the landlords lawn, so have had a go at growing some veg in pots.
I may be being a bit adventurous, but so far have planted beets, french beans, carrotts, prickly cucumbers (which are a bit slow), mixed salad leaves, red onions, spinach, tomatoes, birds eye chillies and some red and green peppers.

If things go well this year, I may be a bit more professional next year and think about creating a raised bed.
