  • Hello from Wales

Hi there, my name is Dot and I live in Wales. I have a smallholding with chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys,a pony, a cow, 2 alpacas,2 dogs and a cat.
I also work to support this lot as a second chef.
And as you can probably guess, no time for a social life but I love it. If I didn't have my sister and her husband helping out I would go quite mad ( I am assuming I haven't already gone there BTW.)

                      Long post alert!!!

We have only been here since Christmas week 2008, about 18 months now, the house was advertised as property with land, they said approx 1.4 acres. Since we bought it we have had it properly measured by an evaluator, turns out we have 3.1 acres.
I did (in the throws of new property madness )grow some potatoes, onions, runner beans, sprouts and brocolli the first summer. I also bought a polytunnel and grew chillis, peppers and salad stuff in there. At the moment the only things in there are 3 grapevines(small) and an ornamental peach tree.

Last year however I/we decided to concentrate on the getting the land straight so didn't grow anything. We did however plant a bramley, a dual eating apple, a cherry and 2 plum trees where we now call (tongue in cheek ) the orchard. I have an apricot tree in a secluded(wind free) spot near the house We also put trellis up along a wall in house area and planted several fruit bushes and rhubarb.
It really is a work in progress, this year I hope to set up 3 or 4 raised veg patches along side the house area which is also near the compost area.
We really and truly "flying by the seat of our pants" and learning as we go.
We have however learnt that geese and ducks like to eat the bark on new trees and chickens will scratch at anything with soil in it.
I think we are finally getting organised( she says laughingly).
