  • hello from Gloucestershire

    Hi
I've just joined as need support in fighting nettles, bindweed, ground elder and red mite who are feasting on some of my poor chickens!
We live on a north west facing hill and have stunning views of the River Severn, the Malverns etc but have been completely snowed in 2 years running and have no sun for about 5 months of the year! (can't have everything!)

today I harvested a load of various types of french beans and some courgettes (the first time I've managed to grow them- usually the slugs get them first!) and I'm really proud of my parmex carrots (very clay soil here) which, again, is the first time I've managed to grow carrots!

Does anyone know if red mite stay in the ground etc for a long time? We've treated 3 chickens who got it badly in the heat and humidity (the others, in a different shed, are fine) and their shed is riddled. I try to be organic but have resorted to insecticides as well as non chemical methods and we've built a new shed (today!) for them and will keep treating and not using their one for about 10-12 months. But will the patch they were living on be contaminated? Can I use it again for chickens ( or turkeys! I've got a load of new chicken and turkey eggs in a couple of incubators!) I can't find anything in my small holding or chicken books- all I know is the mites can survive a long time without living on the chickens.

hope someone can help and look forward to reading your tips on fighting the weeds!

Welcome to the vine Chickgirl. Know just what you mean about bindweed and nettles!

As for red mite and chickens - I think you need to post a specific question in the ruling the roost forum - you may get a faster answer to your questions!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hi and welcome to the madhouse (my standard greeting!)

I'd say get some SMITE and mix it up and spray EVERYTHING with it. Then Creocote all your coops/sheds/whatever. Also, have a look on the forum in the Chook section, there's a 'sticky' on mites, where everyone posts their problems and solutions. You may get some help from there.

      Good luck!

Oh, and don't forget to add your Chickens to the 'How many chooks...' thread too!

Could I please ask you to shorten your location- otherwise all your posts are going to 'hang over the edge of the page' so to speak!
        Thanks
