Just thought that I would say hello to everyone I got my first allotment two weeks ago, it had been rotavated in april but had been left since then and has been growing a lot of thistles on it. I have managed to dig the patch all over in the last week and I am having it rotavated on tuesday hopefully.

I have already planted some spring cabbage leeks and some kohlrabi once it is rotavated I am going to plant some christmas potatoes and more brasicas for next year.

There is a link to my blog in my profile if you would like to see pictures of my allotment.

Welcome to the vine Kev - sounds like the allotment is going to be in full production soon.

Just a cautionary note - are you not expecting a frost before Xmas? How are you going to protect those spuds... It may be wiser to grow them in a tub close to the house where you can throw some bubblewrap or fleece over them at night.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

            Don't do it !
Every thistle root will get chopped into a dozen pieces and will become a new thistle.

Digging them out by hand is more thorough, honestly worth the effort

Welcome to the Vine from me too kevin. Sounds like you've made a great start. Don't expect to be able to get everything done in one hit, take your time or you'll get frustrated with yourself. Cover any ground you can't plant/cultivate right now with black plastic and just work on manageable chunks for now.

I would love to have them near home but I have no where at all to keep them ( apart from the front room ) so I will fleece them on the plot. Here's a link to my blog thing My Allotment its all dug up now finished on Sunday but forgot the camera.

Hello and welcome to the vine Kev. Like the look of ya plot, you could even sow some broad beans later in the year to get a nice early crop in spring.
