  • Hello!

    Hello people!

I'm 22 years old, am Deaf and have just graduated. I am currently looking for job but for now I decided that I want to have an allotment plot. So I can grow own vegetable and fruit. (To save money and I believe in Green.)

I am going to see a lady at my town council tomorrow as she has got a plot that is available for me to have a look at.

I would like to hear advices from you all, for me as a newbie!

    Dean

Hello Dean and welcome to the Vine. I hope that the plot available for you is just what you want. You can get loads of information on here and you can ask specific questions. It does help if you put your location into your profile so that people can give you the best advice for your climate. We are also very nosey and like to know whereabouts you are!

Hi Dean, you're lucky to be offered a plot straight away (I wonder what sort of state it's in - you might be in for some hard work!)
Whereabouts in the country are you? FF's right, we are nosey!

Hey, that doesn't look too bad at all. Those weeds should come out easily! Lucky you. Have a look at the Allotment threads on here - there's loads there to inspire you. Good luck with it!

I went to my town council today to see a lady about the available plot for me. She gave me a paper for me to go to the allotment location and see if I
                  would like to have it.

Image below is a paper she gave me, the no.1 plot on location.

I went, and was so puzzled. The plot no.1 for me, it was not there...

Later on, I found the no.2 and realised that there was big space next to it. That was no.1, the plot was with no walls/fences or a shed!?

I took pictures to show you what was "available" on no.1 plot for me...

What can I do with this? I emailed the lady at town council about this and asked her if she can do something about this...

Can you people give me advices what I should do with this, cos it is available otherwise I have to wait for another allotment which would take me months.

                  Dean

Take it immediately - it looks exactly like what a new plot looks like! Then dig around on the vine as to how to tackle a new plot - there are lots of different ways of doing this and lots of Grapes have posted good advice on this topic! Here's one to start you off!

Welcome to the Vine, Dean.. yes.. take the plot if its close enough to where you live to visit on a daily basis. As its empty you will have lots to do before spring planting time comes round.

                        Thanks Glutton4..., Jeanied and arpoet!

I am going to email town council to see if they can build walls and maybe a shed for my plot, it's worth a try?

So excited, am thinking already about what to grow!

Certainly worth trying to get whatever help you can out of the council!
That doesn't look too bad at all - no brambles, nettles, trees etc! You will have to ask the neighbours about how secure the lotties are (as no 2 looks like a fortress!) ie theft/vandalism to see what type of fencing you need.
I don't see why you can't plant this autumn (away from where fences will be) - autumn onions, broad beans, peas, garlic - look on 'what I did today' to find out what other people are planting now

I'd take it- but keep your name down elsewhere.
I do have my doubts about how safe the site is though(from the fencing on plot 2.)
                            - Plus you are nearer the site entrance.
Just don't leave anything valuable there- nor plant stuff you'd need to leave if you did choose to change sites.
Just get a feel for growing this year- and then see how the security aspect pans out.
I'm wondering if there is a small track where peeps have cut across that plot from the entrance?
Maybe a pile of free pallets tied together would provide a temporary fence whilst you concentrate on your beds and planting out. There's plenty of time to get the fence sorted over the winter period!

go for it!!...it looks pretty weed free to be honest!!!

Oh- and welcome to the Vine!
