Welcome to the vine, Luminox - as RL says, do tell us more about where you are growing. If it is in the UK, then you have a bit of time before you plant your onions in the autumn, and time to get the planting area ready for your potatoes, tomatoes and peppers which go in next spring / summer.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

guys cheers for the quick reply, live in Northern Ireland , I have quite a big back garden but i want to start of small approx 8 square feet and see if i can manage that first rather than turning the back garden in to a plot lol, i was at a friend s and he had approx 3meters by 2 in his back yard with string marking square feet as a guide to how much he can plant, If i got the basic s i think i could manage, basic being do i go buy to soil for my plot ? do i did the garden up ?? lost lol sorry to sound totally stupid but as i say totally new to it and appreciate your help , cheers guys

Hi Luminox - edit your profile to show your location - we have quite a few other Grapes on the vine from Ireland I am pleased to say!
It sounds like your friend has gone in for the 'square foot garden' technique - have a look via the search button for all the different discussions on square foot gardening - there is loads to read up on.
As to whether you dig or not - that will depend on how you are intending to build your beds and what you are building them on. If you are making the bed on an area of lawn you can just put the framework on top and then fill it in with new soil (bought or dug up from elsewhere in the garden). I would dig over to get rid of any weed roots, but then I have all sorts of weeds growing on my plot.
Why don't you use the search button to find all the threads about starting out with your plot as well. I think it will answer your questions quicker than on the introductions thread.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
