Hello from Orkney

Good morning all, new user on board.

I was recommended to join this forum as a new chicken keeper. (We do not yet grow our own fruit and veg, but do have plans to do so.)

You'll find us tucked away on a distant corner of Orkney and if you look hard enough, there is a blog about our adventures with the chooks. There haven't been many adventures yet - they only arrived last week

Most of us were addicted to GYO- and then got chooks...looks like you're doing it the other way round!!!

Chooks aren't as hard on the back as veggies are
Besides - the manure comes before the raised beds can be planted, yes? Think of the hen-keeping as a manure production process...

We don't see much snow here. Temperatures rarely fall below freezing. Mind you, they never get very high in the Summer either. We keep weather stats. They can be interesting.

I suspect that we have much to learn about growing veg in Orkney. It won't be like anything we have done in that line before. There is plenty of expertise to call upon on our island though - the examples at last week's Show were pretty stunning, and an indicator of just what can be achieved under seemingly difficult circumstances.

Hello plumbum and a very warm welcome to the vine from Yorkshire. What a great name for a gardening site. I've had a look at your Blog and your chooks are lovely...I keep saying I wish I'd room for some but alas I haven't .
Veg wise I don't think you could go far wrong with the Brassica family when it comes to cool areas.
