  • Hello from Didcot!

    Hi all :-)

I've been on here since April but mainly lurking until recently. Figured I should say hi.

I'm originally from Philadelphia, but I've been in England for over seven years. I lived in Liverpool for five years, but now I live in South Oxfordshire. I was a solutions analyst (I found ways to put the toothpaste back into the tube, so to speak) until I was made redundant last year. At least it gives me plenty of time for growing vegetables! I live with my partner, and we have eight pet rats.

I'm pretty new to growing things. Last year we grew some tomatoes, chillies, and peppers in containers outside and in my conservatory. I've moved house since and don't have such a warm sunny space anymore, but no matter - I was able to get an allotment in April. I was quite lucky and only had to wait two months before being offered one.

I was really daunted by the whole concept of growing things from seeds, but it's worked out really well. Now I'm hooked! I've been participating in loads of seed swaps and having a lot of fun.

My partner tends to go for the more conventional crops, and I like the exotic. In addition to the more usual crops of potatoes, onions, and beans, I've grown fat baby achochas, west indian gherkins, celtuce, and podding radishes. We've been able to do a lot on the plot despite only just starting in April. Some of it is still a jungle, though! :-)

Welcome sbeneli! Sounds like you've made a brilliant start! You must have put in some really hard work since last spring.

I was visiting my daughter's this weekend at Benson - we were up walking the dog on the Clumps this morning - it was glorious.
Life is too short for drama & petty things!
So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

Welcome aboard - I spent a large patr of my childhood in Didcot - my aunt & uncle (and cousins way back when) live there. Fine part of the world.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing, and getting stuck in. Good luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everybody!

My allotment neighbours have said they are impressed by how much we've accomplished on it this year, so I'm quite pleased. I've been learning a lot and will do a bunch of things differently next year, but we'll hopefully have it all cleared by then. Right now we're only making use of about 2/3 of the space we have. I want to try to get a shed for it, too, if I can find one secondhand or at a good price.

I'll try to take some photographs next time I'm there in good weather. No luck today as it's raining!
