Hi, I've been reading this forum for quite a while and have been getting the grow your own magazine for over a year now so I thought it about time to come say hi.
I don't have an allotment but for the last seven years (nearly 8 now) I've been using my garden at home to grow as much as possible to feed out lil family. This year we turned the front garden into a veggie garden too, which has caused no end of people walking past, double taking and stopping to peer over the wall and look surprised at the different veggies growing there! (it is highly amusing to watch from the front room as they do this too! lol)

My son, who is now 4, has been helping me in the garden for a while now, he likes playing in the soil (doesn't everyone! lol) and likes helping to push the larger seeds into the pots, water them and watch them grow. (I've even caught him talking to them telling them to hurry up and grow!)

My hubby does most of the building work (such as the raised beds) and I'm the one who does the sowing, watering, looking after etc of the plants. Between the three of us we make quite a good little team lol.

Anyways, thanks for keeping me entertained, giving me info and being such a friendly bunch xxx

Hi Cherry Blossom welcome to the vine, as you know lots of good advice on here. I now garden in my back garden, had to give the lotty up for several reasons. I find it easier more water, nip out for ten minutes etc. Enjoy

              Hi there
Sounds like you've got plenty going on there... well done you and welcome to the vine - I only joined in a short while ago but I love it... LOADS of great information and lovely friendly people...
Did you grow flowers too in your front garden or turn it all over to veggies??? I've been mixing mine up more this year with varying degrees of success but have achieved similar attention!!!

LO Cherry Blossom and welcome to the Vine. I grow in my garden at home and as I'm in an inner city area, I get loads of people who actually stop and ask me questions about the veg. It is quite funny when you're indoors and you see people doing the double take!

                      Thanks all!

MrsT, in the front there is a rose shrub in a corner (I don't know if it will still be there next year... may find a spot for it in the back garden), and there are hanging baskets on either side of the bay window which I planted up with homegrown Nasturtiums and sweetpeas.
Next year I'm planning to have the beans and peas growing over an archway with sweetpeas in amongst them too. I'm also trying to work out how we could attach window boxes to the front wall so I can grow various things in them... but like the actual house, the walls outside also seem to be made of something that leaves drills cowering in the corner! lol.
My back garden has more flowers in with edibles in amongst them (I grew one too many brussel plants this year and there are six of them scattered around the garden lol!)

Florence that is brilliant! I wonder how many people we cause to start growing their own at home after seeing ours! I am quite surprised that no one has come in and stolen any veggies yet (we did however lose one pumpkin back in the summer when some nasty toad came in, broke into the side alley and stole our bikes! I think I was more upset by the squished pumpkin than the bikes! ha!)

YES YES... I did my peas and beans with sweet peas... it worked sooo well... although I didn't have quite enough height and crammed too many into too small a space BUT the whole thing was so productive, tasty, lovely smells and looked great too...

                        what's not to love

Have been looking more at companion planting... think there are some real easy wins to be had with that one?????????
