  • Good Evening From Essex

    Hello!

I came across this forum last night when I was looking for some advice on poly tunnels. I ended up reading lots of threads and going to bed very, very late!

I am new to gardening, although when I was younger my father was self sufficient in vegetables so hopefully some of that green fingerness has rubbed off on me.

I don't have a garden, but Ive been lucky enough to get an allotment just around the corner. The local council have released new ones but are having trouble with getting people to take them. They have now extended where they are being offered out to try and fill the empty plots. I hope to be growing lovely vegetables next season!

Its been hard work so far as it has never been dug, fenced or anything. And its called "Stoney Flint" for a reason! This summer we had a few things growing and with various success. Most things went in very late as we never had the plot until June.

Anyways, hope to speak to you very soon and Im sure I will have lots of questions to pick your brains with in the forthcoming months!

Hello, and welcome to the Madhouse. Good luck with it all. Let the Magazine know about the vacant plots - I'm sure they won't stay vacant for long!

      Hello Glutton and thankyou!

How do I let the magazine know about the vacant plots? Do I post the details myself?

              HeyWayne! Thankyou!

Yes, there are many plots still empty, although they are gradually going. Many people are having mutliple ones. There are probably still around 10-15 plots that Ive never seen anyone on when Ive been up there - and Im there every day ha ha

Its a nice little community though but Im probably the youngest one over there. Its fun though and spoken to many new folk that I probably wouldnt of otherwise! There are even three resident ponies in the paddock too

Take it from me there will be plenty of folk on here who will make you feel very welcome......
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,

                    Thankyou for the warm welcome!

Yes indeed, Im looking forward to growing and trying out some new things. I just tried to grow some of the basics this season, but next season I will be more prepared and on time! Im hoping to get some sort of tunnel/greenhouse shelter too as its quite windy over there

The ground Ive got has never had anything at all growing on it, apart from paddock. Its been dug over twice now and seem to be winning the war on thistles. It has a layer of well rotted 3yr old horse poo on it - am I right in just leaving it lying on the top till after the winter? If so how much should I put on? or should I dig this in and put some more on top?

                    So many questions ....... lol
