  • Hello from Pinner, Middlesex

    Hiya,

I recently watched a TV show which inspired me to grow my own fruit and veg . I have never done much gardening before apart from buying and carrying huge compost bags for my wife however now that we have moved to a larger house with a garage and bigger garden I wanted to give this ago!

I really have no idea where to start, firstly I don’t really want to dig up part of my garden (south facing) and I have no clue about growing veg using grow bags. Currently I do not have a greenhouse however i have a garage with windows .

Do I really need to grow veg in the ground? Can I use grow bags only and if so can I re-use the bags? Or can i dig up the earth from the garden stick it in a wooden box or pot and start growing? Any help is very appreciated.

Thank you all for listening sorry about my basic questions.

Firstly hello and welcome to the vine.
Secondly, yes you can grow most fruit and veg in grow bags or containers. I only have a small garden and one raised bed, but I manage to feed myself, my OH and stock up my freezer with what's left over. It doesn't even have to be a grow bag, as my old Dad says "If it holds muck ya can grow in it". Think about buying an arch so you can grow runner beans over it or make a wigwam out of 6ft canes. I wouldn't reuse the compost in the grow bag more than once there's only enough nutrients in for one lot off growing, plus you'll have all the little roots in from what you've just grown, but if you pick out most of the old roots you can empty it onto the garden and dig it in. Good luck with your growing and remember if you get stuck with anything...ask, there's always someone who'll help .

Hi and welcome, I have tried growing things in a garage before but I must admit with not much sucess. It depends on the amount of light you have, if it is one side that is all window you will probably be ok but if it is just a row of small windows you might find that your plants get long and leggy as they search for the light. You might be ok starting them off in there and then moving them outside.

Welcome to the vine, pbuk. As Ginger Ninger says, you can grow in almost any sort of container. You would, however, be wise to use multi purpose compost in your container, and also change this after one crop. What are you hoping to grow? I would start with a few things in pots, but also start to think along the lines of what would look nice in your garden growing alongside the more decorative planting! Then you won't be digging over a whole area of your garden, just placing the odd plant in!

Hello and welcome to the Vine from PB to pb

Container growing is great fun, just remember to keep an eye on your watering. Its very easy to over and under water pots, and the sudden change in moisture can affect crops, i.e. tomatoes, which will tend to split.

              Thank you for your reply

Hi Ginger Ninger thank you for your reply, that’s very helpful I will make some plans before I start.

Hi Stella, thank you for your reply. I have doors that have window and two 1.5m x 2m windows on two of the other walls. Outside I have an area 3.7m x 3.2 meters to move the pots outside when it’s a bit warmer.

Hi Jeanied, thank you for your reply. I am not sure I want to get into decorative planting yet just spuds and salads . I have a 12m x 2m area that I can dig up and plant in the future. However I am not sure how to rotate the area etc. for now I will stick with grow bags.

              Thank you

              PB

Hi pbuk and welcome to the vine, I used to grow in anything that would hold soil or compost before I got my 1st plot last year, I used to buy the cheap growbags from nettos to fill my containers & pots http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...Photos/082.jpg

As Pumpkin Becki said just remember to keep an eye on your watering!
