Where to find walnuts to pickle?

Hi all...

My father in law has mentioned more than once that he used to pickle walnuts years ago. I think he'd like me to try and find some for pickling.

I know they are ready to pick about late june early july, but I'm having trouble finding somewhere to get them, as they are only ready for 2-3 weeks.

Can anyone help please, before my ears hurt more from his pestering?

You can't usually buy them at this stage - you need to find a tree. You collect walnuts for shelling in the autumn when they start to fall off the trees. To pickle them, you need to gather them when the shell isn't yet hardened. Good luck.
