  • Hello

    Hello everyone.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to vegetables and after buying our first home I want to learn as much as I can about growing veg (unfortunately we have a NE facing garden, although the top 3rd of it can have quite a bit of sun).

I'm hoping to grow a lot, if not everything, in containers so have been on the look out for threads related to this.

I'm hoping my choice in veg isn't too ambitious for a first timer and the lack of constant sun isn't too big of an issue either - only time will tell!

Hello and welcome to the vine LilB

I grew all my veg in pots, buckets and containers up until last year and you'll be surprised how well veg does, you just have to be careful not to let them dry out.

Thank you for all your replies.

I sit here most nights trawling through the threads until I get completely overloaded with information!

Looks like my OH will have to get used to me not giving him all the attention.

Well it's nice you decided to say hello

Don't feel overloaded: sow something, grow something, and take it from there.
No need to try and make it perfect the first time

Hey LilB welcome to the vine

I too was a container, plant pot, bucket, kirbside box kind of veg grower up till last spring when my name came up on a alottment list, Its really surprising how well veg grows in all sorts of containers and you never know by this time next year you may have talked your OH into letting you dig up little bit of the lawn for a veg patch

All the best for the season ahead.
                    Chris

That'll be the day! We have to keep most of the lawn 'just in case' we get a dog

Unfortunately (although it really is lovely) my folks built a pergola at the top of the garden - hence the container idea. Also, with our garden being on a slight slope, the left of it can become quite dry whereas the right can be boggy. I'm not sure how veg would do there although I'd love some raised beds.

So far on my list is:

                      Tomatoes (hanging baskets)
                      Potatoes
                      Lettuce
                      Carrots

The motto of Grampian District Association of the National Vegetable Society.

If you haven't got a plot, you can grow it in a pot.

Any old container so long as it will hold compost and drain freely.
