  • This is me!

    Hi & hello to all

My name is Katy & have just come accross this Very helpfull forum.

I moved to sheffield in november and we inherited a greenhouse, with a few seed trays, netting & compost bin.

The thing is as I never grown anything (well I have toms & strawberries lol!) at my old house. The thing is I dont know where to start.... I've been down to the local garden centre and bought some seed potatoes, growing bags & organic compost which I'm going to tackle today. A young chap gave me great advice but I could do with some more.....

I have some carrot seed (JEANETTE F1 & PARMEX) & some peas (AMBASSADOR), I'm wanting to put them into the G'house but how do I do it (I know that is a lame question!) will they grow ok in the greenhouse or will I have to clear some ground outside??? I plan to buy some pots to use in there will these be ok??

I do plan to dig a small patch in the garden at some point, but for now I'm happy just using the G'house if it alows me lol!!

Sorry for the long post, Thanks in advance

    Katy x

P.s how do I use a compost bin??

Best to keep precious space in the greenhouse for toms, cucumber and peppers. Carrots and potatoes will grow better outside and importantly need less attention out there as they will have the benefit of natural watering from rainfall.

Carrots and peas don't want to be in a greenhouse at all: they can go outside (oh, and hello and welcome, and how's your divorce going? )

Welcome to the vine Katy - how lovely to have a greenhouse!
As the others have said, the potatoes get planted outside in late March, so you will need to dig up a potato bed to plant them in. Until then, you can put them sprouty side up in an old egg box, open to the light.
You can sow your carrots in some nicely dug over beds as well.
And you can start off some tomato seeds indoors in the warm now, ready to go out into the greenhouse in grow bags when there is no danger of frost.
Lots more ideas to be found here on the vine - gave a good browse around!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hello Katie and a very warm welcome to the Vine from another Sheffielder! As others have said, have a good look around and use the search button, or ask specific questions, there's loads of help and advice to be had and everyone is very friendly.

I'm sorry Snadger, but it's not Jordan I Unfortunalty got the surname off my wonderfull hubby!

Thank you for the Very warm welcomes. My Seed potatoes are chitting on the kitchen window as we speak (though I'm sure it'll be a little while before I can plant them!

Jeanied, I picked up some potato grow sacks whilst at the garden centre so I shall give them a whirl!

I picked up a cheap gardening book y'day from The Works "Growing Vegetables" by Tony Biggs Its got a wealth of info, and in terms that I can understand lol!!

Been and got me a few veg plants from B&Q last night... 3 varieties of toms, pepper, a couple of cucumber & chillies. They're 10 for £7 which I thought being first time growing not bad priced. I was told by a lovely lady shopper that I need to keep them indoors for now as the weather aint that great. I'll be back there to get some larger pots once they get a little more established.

                            Thanks again Katy x
