  • Hi from Leicester

Hi everyone, I'm from a little place called Ratby which is just outside Leicester. I've just moved into a bungalow and finally have a garden! I have absolutely no idea what kind of soil I have, I obviously haven't inherited my gran's green fingers
I'm looking forward to reading some threads and working out how to get a garden full of herbs, bumble bees and butterflies

Hi there- and welcome to the Vine!

        Soil type....
Have a look at the weeds in your garden- and any open land/ grass verges nearby- and make a note of what they are so you can ID them ( we'll help if you can take piccies of any unknowns)
Then have a play on Goodle for the soil types they prefer...tis much cheaper than buying a soil testing kit

That'll give you an idea of what fruit and veg would prefer to grow in your garden !

Hello Karen and a very warm welcome to the vine from Jinny cat & me.
If you want butterfly's in ya garden you'll need a "Buddleia" bush, but beware if your growing veg the butterfly's will lay there eggs on ya veg, then there caterpillars will eat ya veg...second thoughts...don't get a buddleia .

Wow what a friendly place :-) Thank you for the quick replies! I'll do that with the weeds tomorrow (if it's not pouring down with rain)
Lol Ginger, my mum has a butterfly bush and said exactly the same as you!

It's only the Cabbage Whites you want to keep off your veg (brassicas). Please do encourage the other kinds Verbena Bonariensis is very attractive to CWs too - I use it as bait, then catch the CWs in my hand and despatch them.

I keep a patch of (sunny) nettles which host Peacock caterpillars. Bees love comfrey & chive flowers (and many more).

I love the winter but snow never seems to last long in the Midlands :-( I'm loving this site but my head is spinning from all the info and ideas lol.
I'm trying not to get too carried away but it's like a whole new world having a garden!
