    Hello,

    Nice to meet you,

I'm new here and probably won't post much.

I got my allotment (1/2 plot) near birmingham in september after a very short 3 month wait.

I have now cleared it, and begun digging for planting it. It is quite heavy clay soil and unfortunatly I can't get manure and don't have compost yet so I don't expect it to be very productive this year.

Hi Blue Octopus, welcome to the Vine.

Clay soil is full of goodness - just difficult to work! For manure, you can ask the other plotholders where they get theirs from - or phone the local stables - they may even deliver.

You can always buy a sack of MPC, and dig that in, that'll help to open it up a bit! A bit expensive mind, but as Hazel says clay holds onto nutrients really well - just needs that little bit of work to open it up.

      Hello & Welcome!

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Vine. Do have a go at growing something this season and come on here as often as you can, it's very friendly and the advice is valuable.

Welcome to the vine Blue Octopus - hopefully someone can steer you to a source of good farmyard manure soon - but do start your compost heap too!

Thank you for the welcome - I've included a picture of my plot when I recieved it, I've done a fair amount of digging since then and put up a shed. My greenhouse is at home as the other side of the fence in the picture is a youth club and footballs come over regularly.
