Good morning, my name is Vicki and I'm an alcoholic........ oops, sorry, wrong forum .

I have been recommended this site by a friend from a dog forum we both frequent.

After last year's success at growing tomatoes, I decided to do much more this year. I even bought a book but am finding it only partially helpful.

I have loads of questions on the produce I have planted, and hope I don't drive everybody crackers!

    It's lovely to be here

It's called "Grow your own veg", by Carol Klein

Ah. Pretty book, but for basic info you can't beat The Vegetable & Herb Expert: Amazon.co.uk: Dr D G Hessayon: Books

Hello Vicki and a very warm welcome to the vine from Jinny Cat & me as well. I've got all Carol Klein's "Grow your own" books I find them easy to follow, have you read the "Cook your own veg" one yet?
You can find some good gardening books for little money in second hand shops. Jeanied (off the vine) when she was visiting me found "Cook your own veg" for less than a fiver in a second hand shop in Holmfirth, bit far for you to travel but ya get the jest I'm sure .

As you say, it is pretty, but seems to be more for someone with more knowledge than me....... it was a prezzie for OH's last birthday, and bought in a rush...... Thanks for the tip

              Did someone mention me?

Hi there Vicki, welcome to the vine!

You are right - the vine is better than a whole library full of books!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thank you! I frequent charity shops weekly and will now look out for "growing" books

Welcome Vicki. Be warned......visiting here is highly addictive but the byproduct is that you will learn theory much quicker than from any other source. What great fun it is to then put some of your new found knowledge into practice........what are you looking to grow and where?

I found square foot gardening by mel bartholemew an excellent read and in my first year followed the method. Got a few more square feet now with a lottie so it's a merged method for me now

                    Loving my allotment!

                      Thank you Newton.

Although my garden is mainly paved (I have dogs that dig!) I bought a 2 metre trug and a small, four-tier greenhouse.

                      In the trug I have:
                      Carrots (see separate thread)
                      Onions
                      Radishes

                      In the greenhouse there are:
                      Cucumbers
                      Chillies
                      Aubergines
                      Butternut squash

                      In various troughs and pots:
                      More onions
                      Tomatoes
                      Peppers

                      In hanging baskets:
                      Strawberries

All this came about after buying two 99p tomato plants last year and watching in awe as they bore an abundance of fruit......

I do have a small amount of unpaved ground which will be the Dalek composter's home, when it finally arrives
