Hello All,
A BIG HELLO from theweescottishgrower (TWSG)
My name is Connor Macleod (No Highlander puns please!!!!) and I live in the Scottish Highlands. I have quite a large garden and I have recently decided to start growing my own veggies and fruits. The plot is laid out and I am in the process of getting the greenhouse errected, so I should be in a position to get planting and sowing over the next month or so. I have spent the last wee while browsing the forum and it seems like a happy crowd of growers here, with lots of experience and more importantly; happy to pass on information to novices.
I dont have high expectations for this year with it being a bit late in the season, but with all the advice I'm hoping to receive on the forum, I'm a wee bit more optimistic for better results next season. I look forward to having valued discussions with all who wish to listen to the rants of a highlander.

Can I ask, as the Scottish Highlands are quite big, just how far north you are, and is it still snowing?

I am about level with Inverness, but on the West Coast, on the North bank of Upper Loch Torridon. I don't ussually get a lot of snow locally as I'm on the side of a sea loch, albeit it can be difficult getting around and about but that is what Landrover Defenders are for. I like your thinking about yon solitary highland lass, but I'm afraid if I find her first it's finders keepers

You must be on Torridonian sandstone then, presumably? Can you see the Shiant Islands from your house, or are they too far away?

Torridonian Snadstone.....Yes...and a bugger when you hit it with a spade
Shiant Isles.......No cant see them from the hoose, the Isles are off the West coast of Lewis, so if you were sailing from Shiant to me you would head SSW and first pass through Loch Torridon, then through the north end of Loch Shieldaig and East in to Upper Loch Torridon. I'm the Heilanman on the left, lifting my kilt and flashing my bummocks at the tourists (weather permitting of course).
Twins........tempted to say double finders keepers, but I think one Highland lass is enough for any man, so you will have first dibs if I find the twins

Ahh, there I was looking in the wrong bit of the loch.

Is your soil shallow, on that sandstone?

I'll be following your exploits with interest - it'll be good to see what you grow all the way up there. It's about as different from my back garden in Walsall as it gets, I reckon.

The soil is not too shallow (about 1 - 1 1/2 spades depth at its shallowest), however I have raised the beds for my new plot.
Had a look at Walsall......sorry mrbadexample, it looks far to busy and crowded for a heilenman like me. It's nearly in Welsh Wales

Ooh, no, I don't think I'd recommend it (I'm not a native). And yes, it is quite close to Welsh Wales, isn't it? Hopefully, my leeks shouldn't be too homesick, then.
