  • Hello from a total beginner

    Hello everyone,

Been lurking here for a while so thought it was about time I started contributing (although for now all I can contribute will be hundreds of questions ).

We bought a house in December with a fairly big veg patch that used to be part of the allotments next to us - it was very overgrown in December, but we've managed to dig it all and put some beds in. I've put some pics in below.

We are also incredibly lucky to have a small orchard at the end of our garden. So far we seem to have 2 greengage trees and 2 types of apple - definitely one bramley, but no idea about the other. If there are any apple experts willing to have a look I'll post some photos of the fruit in a few months.

Thanks to everyone in advance for any help or advice we can get here - it seems like a really friendly place so far We've read a few allotment books, but there's no substitute for experience (as we've found so far with a few disasters this year!).

        Welcome.

Nice looking beds - what's in them? Looks a good start.

                Thanks everyone!

mrbadexample - it would probably be quicker to list what we haven't planted We went totally overboard - I've been told it's something that practically everyone who has a veg patch for the first time does

I'll give it a go : Potatoes - earlies and maincrop, carrots- 3 types!, dwarf french beans, peas, radish, onions, spring onions, garlic, broccolli, cauliflower, brussell sprouts, swede, parsnips (they didn't germinate!), asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, chilis, cucumber, aubergine, raspberries.

                Bit much?

ginger ninger - I'm snap happy at the moment so I'll keep em coming!

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I'm quite new to this myself - dabbled a bit over the last couple of years, gone a wee bit mad this year. I'm growing 38 different things.

And lots of people seem to have had trouble with parsnips germinating this year.
