Newbie's motto - 'Just stick it in soil n see what happens'

Hi everyone,

Yep I'm new to this site and growing stuff. I have never managed to grow or keep alive anything before but this year decided to give it another go.

I don't have a garden, allotment or greenhouse. What I do have is a back yard with lots of sunlight so I decided to give this growing stuff a go, and my Motto so far is 'Just stick it in soil and see what happens'.

After a couple of weeks of this I have to say it works although I am sure that all you experienced gardeners/growers will probably cringe at this thought. However, now it's all becoming a bit more serious. I have beautiful flowers (yep I can't remember their names but they are puuuuurrrrdy.) Also on the go I have two types of Tomatoes, Garlic, Strawberries, Bell Peppers, Chili and some herbs(?????)

I am going to post photos on here when I figure out how to and if any of you rather wonderful lot want to pass on your advice then please please please feel free to do so since I have no idea what I am doing.

Anyway I look forward to hearing from you and sharing our results.

Thank you Chris. Everything I have is in a pot well I say 'pot' I am pretty much using anything that will hold soil. My Toms are in a recycle box! The Sunflowers are in an old chimney pot and I haven't managed to kill anything yet.

Ananke, thank you it seemed the only way to start. I only wish that there was a list somewhere defining things like Truss, pinching out and other terminology because frankly that might as well be in Swahili :-) !!!

My top tip to you would be to get saucers for all your pots ~ you will save time & water and your plants will be happier

Well well you DO seem a friendly bunch thank you for making me feel welcome. Two Sheds, no sorry not Sage it's some border plant (sorry I don't know what it's called) that my partners Mum gave me a tiny cutting off a month or so ago. It's kinda sentimental so I'm very happy that it is happy to be with us here. Oh and saucers..... excellent idea I'm going to do that just as soon as I can.

I'm really very proud of the yard so far, please feel free to take a look at my album we took some old pallets and made them a little feature in our otherwise very plain back yard.

Lol Taff, the best fun I have had so far was with my Strawberries. Mine against Asda's. Blind test and I was amazed when in actual fact you lot are onto something here.............home grown DOES taste better and I don't like strawberries!
