  • Another one wet behind the ears

    Hello everyone,

My name is Bob, I'm disabled and have a smallish garden 24ft X 21ft, and I use 12ft X 5ft for veg growing, the problem being, I have major drains running through the rest of the garden.
I have up till now, only ever been interested in growing flowers in baskets and tubs, but a while ago, I suffered a major illness that's left me disabled and unable to work, and my Doctor told me I'll never get any better, and never be fit enough to work, and so, the past couple of years, I've found my disability has settled, and not gotten any worse, and through looking for something to do, I've taken up gardening, although it takes me a very long time to do anything, I find I'm enjoying it.
My son dug over the garden area for me, and removed about a ton of stones, and then mixed in several big 120ltr bags of compost as the ground was very sandy, and the mixture appears to be working, as I've now got potatoes, leeks, spring onions, red and white onions, carrot, beetroot, small white turnip, corn on the cob and round the edge of the garden,, pea pods, and in my small greenhouse, I've got tomatoes, cucumber, Scotch bonnet chili and peppers gowing quite nicely, and I'm pleased to say, I've actually managed to get most of them growing.
However, my potato shaws are nearly 4ft high and I've had to get my son to tie them to big canes as they want to fall over, and although they're flowering nicely, I've never seen potato shaws this big, and being a first time gardener, how will I know when the time is right for digging them up, I'm sorry, but I don't know what variety they are, they were given to me, and I just planted them and they've grown, the flowers have lilac petals with white tips, and a yellow centre, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

hiya, can't help with the potatoes, but what you can do is have a furtle and see how big they are, or if you can remember the variety, someone will know

I'm guessing from the fact that you use the term shaws rather than haulmes, that you live somewhere north of the border.

Do you remember when you planted your potatoes? different types take a different length of time to grow so that might help as an indicator of when to start having a dig around to see how large they are.

Hello and welcome to the vine Bob

I agree with Taff about having a furtle you never know you might be eating your own spuds for tea.

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Vine. Sometimes when potatoes flower they are ready to harvest, so have a dig around and under a plant (furtle) to see. As Bren says, you might be eating them for your tea!

Firstly, thank you all for your words of welcome, its really appreciated.
I got the potatoes into the ground about the middle of April, I'm just hopeful that after all my work and care, that I've not just grown tattie flowers with nothing underneath.

Welcome to the forum! I had very tall halums/shaws/stalks on mine in planter sacks - probably around 4' too. They fell over, broke etc- I just tied them all up canes. Not sure why, maybe excess nitrogen- I left them until the halums started to die back then tipped them out and had a very reasonable crop. Keep them well watered as they'll be swelling now!

The wife went for a wee ferret around today, just to see if she could find anything, we near had a fit laughing, she found three overgrown ping pong balls and two very small marbles at the bottom of one shaw, we never even bothered looking at the others, but I can assure you all, they'll be getting plenty of water poured over them for the next few weeks thats for sure.
We've had a lot of rain here in the last couple of months, I'd have thought we would have had very well developed potatoes by now, I actually thought they might have been suffering with too much rain, just goes to show what I know.
