  • Newbie who needs advice for begining.

    Hi all,
I am in the south west and saying hello to fellow members.
I have decided to make use of some land behind my garage for growing veg etc and the first job i have carried out is to fit a Sankey 210 Ltr water Butt & Diverter in the downpipe.
I have 2 questions and looking for some advice if i may.
1,Looking at the photo supplied when the water in the butt reaches a certain level i assume it will start to fill the white flexi tube "supplied in the kit" back into the diverter and down the downpipe to the main drain etc,BUT will the maximum level in the butt be as per the yellow line or the red line ?
2,When the winter arrives should i do the following, empty the butt should we have a hard frost and the water in the barrel freezes causing a split in the butt OR just remove the white flexi pipe so the water travels straight down to the drain thus not entering the butt,if this option is advisable how would i seal the end of the white flexi tube as i dont want to just point it towards the sky etc and looking around i do not see a inline tap that i could fit etc to do the job.

If you kind of understand what i am trying to achieve please advise.

    Thanks very much.

I know this may sound a bit basic but is it possible to insert a cork or rubber bung into the pipe inside the water butt?

      Hello,
I did think of that but i thought as it had to be a tight fit in order to shut the water off 100% would i have a problem then trying to remote it.

Water butts should be frost/split proof.

I got 4" of ice last winter (fierce) in my butts, I just lifted it out each day (so the fish could breathe)

          Thanks for the reply,
I had fish once in a large plastic container and to overcome your point i put a plastic ball in the water.
When the surface of the water started to freeze the fish would suck around the ball below the water thus keeping it moving and never had any die nor did the ball freeze at all so it did not move "i,e when the fish were asleep".

Wouldn't know where to start with a water butt, but welcome to the Vine!

As two sheds has pointed out it should be frost proof so the ice will just expand upwards into the airpsace under the lid. The fill point should be the lowest point ( red arrow).

Your welcome and welcome to the vine. By the way I may as well tell you before the 'purple fairy' lol (sorry Rustylady!) comes along and tells you. If you put your general location in your profile settings it does really help when grapes give you advice in future. A lot of questions asked need a location to help answer.
