  • Hello fellow vegetable addicts

    Hi All,

My name is Ross from sunny Gretna, Dumfries and Galloway. Recently got myself on the property ladder and always promise myself when I did I would have a good vegetable patch and attempt to grow my own. Moved in in march and so far so good. Constructed a couple of raised beds from old railway sleepers and so far this year i've had success with potatoes, lettuces, radish, peas, carrots and spring onions. Complete failure with purple sprouting broccoli and red cabbage which have been absolutely demolished by caterpillars. I dont think they are saveable!

Child number one on its way, due on Sunday 28th August!

Just thought I would say hi and give you all prior warning to be prepared for some stupid questions coming from me.

I'll start with question number 1...
I'm coming to the end of some pea and spring onion crops and would like to replace them with some vegetables which i could perhaps plant now from either seed or plants and they will give me produce up to and through winter. Any suggestions as to what i should start with?

Hope you are all well and happy veg growing!

    Ross

Hello Ross and a very warm welcome from Yorkshire from Jinny cat & Me. Things to plant now, mmmm...let me think. What about curly kale? More radish, quick crop of salad leaves, garlic in mid October. Swiss chard for baby leaves, pak choi, kohl rabi, last sowings of turnip. Hope this helps a little.

Number one baby dew at the weekend, hope everything goes off ok...one thing...you do know we go all mushy with babies on here and photos are a must.

Good luck with ya garden and hope to chat once in a while. xx

Hello, and welcome to the Madhouse!

I'm no use with veg advice really, just here for the company. I don't do kids either, but can help out with cats, dogs, horses, chickens and geese!

Hello Ross and welcome to the Vine. If you take a look at the "What I did Today" thread (it goes back a long way), you'll see what folks plant at this time of year. I'm putting in cabbage, cauliflower and kale at the moment.
