Hello good people of GYO Forum,
I've been lurking and learning here for a couple of weeks and decided it was time to join up and join in. I probably won't be a prolific poster due to having too many interests and not enough time but who knows? Maybe I'll become totally addicted and end up spending more time on here than I really should.
So, what's my story?
I work with my bro' during Spring, Summer and Autumn as a maintenance gardener, mowing, strimming, weeding and forking, as well as trimming the occasional hedge. Winter is my time off.
For the past year, or thereabouts, I've been thinking about growing my own fruit 'n' veg and the time has come to quit procrastinating and start actually growing stuff.
So far I've bought:- 3 Honeyoye strawberry starter plants to accompany the three that a friend gave me late last year, 5 Kestrel seed potatoes, Alicante tomato seeds, Early Nantes 5 carrot seeds, Iceberg 2 lettuce seeds, Autumn Green Calabrese broccoli seeds, Ailsa Craig onion seeds, White Gem parsnip seeds, Sweet Mixed pepper seeds, White Lisbon spring onion seeds, Primo II cabbage seeds, Coriander seeds, Chive seeds, Cayenne Chilli pepper seeds and last but most definitely not least, Jalapeño Chilli pepper seeds.
This afternoon I will begin disassembly of an 8'x6' greenhouse that I'm buying from a lady who lives about 1 ½ miles away.
My bedroom windowsill has a B&Q propagator on it which contains 22 peat pellets, these have been seeded with a small selection of some of the seeds listed above and so far five have sprouted, hopefully more will have germinated but not popped their little heads into the light yet (it's only been a week since the seeds went in). The five consist of:- 2 lettuce, 2 tomato and 1 carrot (aw bless, he might be a little solitary carrot but I love him all the same).
The three donated strawberry plants have survived winter outside but will be taken better care of in the future now that I'm getting organised, and the three that I bought are doing well on the kitchen windowsill.
I've accumulated a good collection of containers ranging in size from Morrisons flower buckets to flippin' huge! and have just bought three potato grow sacks from Poundland. I also have 250l of B&Q compost to get me started, the quality of which seems to be pretty good.
Well I reckon that's about it for now. No doubt this will escalate and I already have plans for a slightly raised bed to house my brassicas, until I end up going the way of the allotment
)
Goodness me, what have I started?
Best wishes
