Hello all,

My name's Sam (Samantha). I hope you're all well? I'm 24, I'm a radiography student and I have two children. I'm completely new to grow your own, in actual fact I haven't started yet. I am looking for some advice on growing potatoes, carrots, lettuce and maybe onions and mushrooms (?). My garden is large enough for a plot however, it floods quite easily with rain and is also clay so far down. I'm wondering whether it would be wise for me to try and grow things in containers for my first go, as I have absolutely no experience. If anybody has anything they could share with me and point me in the right direction, it would be really appreciated. Thank you

Welcome to the vine Sam. Clay is a great soil type to have if you're prepared to put the effort in - it holds onto water and nutrients well, so if you open it up by incorporating as much organic matter as you can, you'll have a lovely growing medium.

If your garden floods completely where you're looking to grow, it might be worth looking into digging some drainage channels.. hard work, but worth it if you want to be able to grow crops before you're able to improve the drainage etc.

If you can't get around to doing all this now (I started growing a similar age to you, and I've also got two young nippers now so know how hectic it can be) then there's always the option of growing in containers for this year. You can buy planter style sacks for potatoes (perosnally, I'd goto one of the various cheaper shops (pound stretcher, etc) rather than a garden centre/diy shop - they're around half the price there and will last you a good few seasons). The downside to that is, you need to keep on top of watering if its dry where you - even more so for smaller containers.

Sam - I grow everything in containers as my garden isn't suitable for veg growing. I grow potatoes in the bags Chris mentioned and also have successfully grown small cabbages, broccoli, runner beans, French beans, mange tout, beetroot, spinach, courgettes in pots as well as the usual tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce etc.

To be honest, I have discovered there is more you can grow in pots than can't.
