  • Feral007 here

We're from Snowy NSW in Australia. We have 90 acres, as well as a garden. Last few years have been trying to work out how to cope with the cold and the dry windy heat; how to be more organic and less chemically oriented on the farm and how to have less to mow!
Went on a day workshop on permaculture gardening with one of my teens. We came home and started a no-dig garden as we have a lot of rock under the ground and it's worked pretty well for a start. My son wants to map everything out first (and never get started) and I just want to throw all the seeds in and see what comes up. We did a bit of both and had some funny results, and some even edible!

Looking at trying to make a tunnel out of plastic to manage the cold months, and then put up shade cloth for those baking summer days.

We're also on a big Natural Farming learning curve. They say you're never too old to learn....but some days you can be too tired. Luckily the garden and the fabulous views from it make it all worthwhile. I have a blog with a gardening section, and take the mickey out of our efforts, since if you can't laugh it's not worth doing.
Looking forward to listening to what you do 'over there' as we're a bit of a rarity here with the -10C in winter, so typical Aussie info doesn't aways work. Ali

Hi Ali and a big warm welcome from "Sunny" Old South Wales.
That's some garden you have - sounds wonderful. I garden along permaculture lines too. I don't really believe in interfering with the soil structure more than is necessary and am happy to have a natural look to my garden.
    Look forward to hearing more!

Welcome to the vine Ali - well there are lots of ideas and plans on here - but you will have to learn to be an expert in using the search button as the current threads will all be 6 months out of season for you!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

          Feral, love the name
Have a look at some of Sepp Holzers books? videos? if you can find them, since he's a good example for you, being as his farm is in the alps more or less, at least for the cold aspect of it anyway.
          and welcome

I started out just chucking seeds in a bit of empty ground too. I just wanted to get started ~ it may not be how I garden now (I'm a bit more of a planner, but only a rough plan) but it taught me a lot about how plants grow and what they like/don't like

If you fail at something, find out why and try again ~ don't give up

I'd also recommend Gaia's Garden, it's big on permaculture, but also has great ideas about sustainability, growing veg in difficult climates etc

Haha - no, not 90 acres of raised beds!

Thanks for all the tips folks, it's time consuming trying to find sites and authors who have things that are useful to our particular area.
As for things being 6 months out of date, well it will give me time to get organised surely

                          Hello and welcome, Feral.
Your space sounds marvelous, though definately spacious.

                          Goats?
I have no idea what temp is too cold for them but I have heard they are great lawn mowers.
Course I have an obsession with goat's cheese, so this is just wishful thinking on my part.
Not that I would actually get up early enough to milk them or anything.....

NO,def no goats! That song 'You can't fence me in' or something like that was meant about goats. The will eat the clothes off the clothesline (as will one of the dogs hence the electric fencing around it) but goats will squeeze thru any fence. We had wild goats here for a while, but then someone came and caught them for me - not much point having 90 acres and still having to buy in hay for the horses because the wild goats are eating it all.
