  • Hello from Yorkshire

    Hello everyone

I first dabbled in gardening 23 years ago when I had a new house with just a plot of mud for a garden. I laid a lawn and planted the borders, many of the plants coming from seed. Don't remember doing any veg though.

I moved to Yorkshire 18 years ago and didn't do much gardening - walking in the Dales and Lakes was far more appealing. Now I have a young family we have started trying to grow veg. Over the last few years I've tried growing various things, mostly in pots, without much success. However, last year we grew sprouts (because my daughter asked us to!) and they were a great success. A trip to RHS Harlow Carr about a month ago inspired me to take it a bit more seriously.

So now I have a bed dedicated to veg that is about 7m x 1.2m, divided into three areas for crop rotation. In this I have sown carrot, beetroot, kohl rabi, leek (plus some more in a module tray), lettuce and radish. On the kitchen windowsill are french beans to replace the lettuce and radish. Also inside, eventually to go in pots outside, are courgette, squash and pepper. Plus dwarf runner beans to go in hanging baskets. There's also my daughter's magic bean plant that she brought home from school having sown the seed. It's obviously a runner bean and will be climbing to the ceiling soon!

So far only the lettuce have poked their heads above the soil or compost, but fingers crossed...

    Richard.

Hi RPT. Welcome to the vine. You live in a lovely part of the world(mind you, my judgement depends in part in the quality of the local brew). My brother used to live in Thirsk in N Yorks. I really loved visiting and touring around the neighbouring towns on market days. It's a super way of seeing an area. We don't have regular markets up here

Don't be in too much of a rush to get your courgette, squash, peppers, runner beans outside, they'll not survive a frost They'd be okay outside in the day, as long as the temperature is above 10c Good luck.

Welcome Richard. Happy growing! And like sarzWiz said be careful about when you plant out your tenders. They might look like triffids by the end of may!
