  • Hi

Hi from a newbie (to gardening as well as to the forum) in sunny Manchester. This forum was mentioned to me by a couple of members of a diet and weight loss forum I use (piskieinboots being one of them) and I've found myself nipping on here regularly since then so it felt rude not to introduce myself!

I'm not so much of a novice gardener as a complete ignoramus. Seriously - I know nothing. I live in a flat and have never had a garden but I've now become a bit obsessed with growing things in pots and am even planning on asking to garden the communal area in front of my flat (some other residents garden areas in front of their flats). So far I have a ridiculous number of tomato plants which seem to be thriving on the window sills (didn't realise they would all germinate when I planted the seeds) as well as some rocket, plus I've planted citrus scented basil, radishes, baby beetroot and mixed salad leaves. The aim is to get most outside in pots or growbags. I don't have a balcony or patio as such - just the paths front and back of my flat - but there is room for them there and both my neighbours have pots etc. Hopefully they will not go walkabout!

I think I'm boring friends and family with my constant questions so have decided I need a new lot of people to bore I will probably be mainly a lurker - reading and learning - but I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.

I know the feeling - I want to grow everything and am really having to rein myself in. I only have a small amount of space and it's pretty shady due to overhanging trees so I am limited in what I can really grow but that doesn't stop me wanting everything I see. I very nearly came back from the garden centre yesterday with a patio sized blueberry bush and even a lemon tree when I only went to look and fruit trees were not even on the list of things to look at!

The sad thing is I was actually looking up allotments on the internet this afternoon and wondering whether I should get my name down given the long waiting list. Despite a total lack of knowledge, the fact that I own no gardening tools and the fact that I would struggle with a lot of digging, the idea of an allotment has become quite exciting!

I do but have a feeling I will be sick to death of them in 6 months time if all the plants I have survive (13 currently but a few more germinating).

Hello and Welcome, the thing with limited space and big ideas is to think laterally or in this case vertically. I might try this idea for herbs and stuff - although it looks as though they've got all sorts in their shoe rack, including lettuce and those tiny tomatoes.

Croeso. I really like the way this vine is about gardening and nobody minds if that's all you want to talk about.

I have so many questions they are falling over themselves trying to get out!

I've become obsessed. I'm spending all my spare time hanging out at garden centres and I've started watching gardeners world. I spend every work lunchtime wandering around Wilkinsons because they have pretty good gardening section. yesterday I bought some seed trays and thought it was the most exciting thing I'd bought for ages. Except for the pot I bought at the weekend. And the seeds I bought at the weekend... Is there any hope for me? Is this a temporary insanity or am I afflicted for life?
