  • Hi all newbie here (well after 15 posts, Lol)

    Hi, I'm Jono,

I'm from Wales and am a self sufficient enthusiast (I say enthusiast because I'm not there yet lol) . Been trying hard for 6 years to get my own veg garden but never actually ate any of what I planted, reason being we would set it all up get things growing but it wasn't just veg that would grow so did our family! so we would move to a bigger house before we could harvest anything

I'm also a Bushcraft Instructor, Knife Maker, Woodsman and Wiccan Priest, but my main job is Dad and Husband
I don't believe in going out and buying tools, because I have the knowledge and ability to make them, Forks, rakes brooms anything that I can, I'll make.

so thats me really, a wilderness wandering, woodworking, witch with 3 kids and a ball and chain lol, and I look forward to meeting you all, and sharing advice and ideas with each other

    Best wishes, Jono

Hey Jono, I've seen you round to posts already. We're trying to get more sustainable here, but it can be hard work with the fierce heat and the freezing cold. One of my sons is determined that we can produce most of our own food - trouble is I'm pretty sure that by the time we get that much stuff happening he'll get snapped up by some young lady, and I'll be looking after it all on my own!
    It's fun getting started tho

Hello Jono......welcome I go down towards your neck of the woods quite often....well to Abercrave actually, but not a million miles from you is it?!

Fingers crossed you can reap the benefits of your hard labour this year!

PS: Are us Welshies taking over??!

Hello Jono and its Croeso from me too. I'm intrigued by your range of interests and skills and hope you'll tell us more in time. You might want to remove most of your address from your profile though, just to maintain a bit of privacy! Ammanford would be more than enough to give everyone an idea of your local climate!

Hi Jono, sounds like you should have your own TV series!

My OH calls me a witch all the time but I don't think it's meant in a spiritual way.

Hope you get chance to celebrate a harvest this year. Let us know what that involves when the time comes.

How do you make a fork that won't break under the strain of heavy lifting? Granted I know they're not lifting tools, but like most people I do stress my tools more than I should (one reason why I bought a decent set after breaking so many cheaper ones).

That's down to the type of wood you select, the grain of the wood and the angles used during the steaming and bending process, the best way is to grow a fork takes about 3-5 years but it will last a lifetime lol

Nah there's enough people on the telly, not a carrer choice i would make lol

I think your OH means it in a very different way,Wicca isn't a religion, its a way of life, The word "Wicca" and "Witch" means wise or wisdom (nothing like harry potter lol), so you should thank your OH for recognising your so wise lol
Harvest celebration is called Lughnasadh or August Eve' and just like all celebrations its a party around a bonfire eating drinking dancing singing, pretty normal really, the only difference is the that we are "skyclad" at the time (Google that one lol) ATB Jono

Yes he does. He's always showing me the broom and saying 'Haven't you got somewhere to go?

I guessed the meaning of skyclad. These days I'm afraid it would take more than a few bevies round a bonfire to induce me to disrobe. Would certainly bring the celebration to an abrupt halt.

So does that mean that Lughnasadh is celebrated on the last day of August? That's quite early isn't it?
