  • Eek! My First Ever Post on Any Kind of Forum.

Hi - I like this forum immediately as it seems to have an eccentric and eclectic membership. I'll fit in fine

This is our 2nd year of gardening, last year we built 4 raised beds and did really well. This year we went bonkers and built a 15 x 12 poly tunnel. That was fun, the instructions came with QR reader for videos. so I could sit on the bench and watch the footage while shouting when my hubby was doing it wrong. We actually started gardening together as a marital bonding exercise.

So, far in the PT we've got lettuce, chillies, courgettes, french beans, aubergines, squash, and 19 tomato plants. I know - but I couldn't bear to throw out the little suckers when they were seedling. We'll learn.

In the beds we have some pathetic beetroot, I sowed three lots and the last ones only just made it,. Any ideas on why they may not have germinated? Also, sugar snap peas, herbs, pak choi (not as successful as last year), coriander, strawberries, fennel, more lettuce, kale, and some currant bushes and goosegogs.

I am suffering information overload from the books we have been given for Christmas and birthdays, so I thought a forum would be easier than wading through indexes. The books all say I should be harvesting and then digging up to make room in the PT for winter stuff but most of my crops are only just starting now in there. I want to make the most of the tunnel over the winter, should I be ruthless and clear some of the tomatoes and other stuff? The courgettes and squash take up loads of room, next year I'll grow them outside.

Did I mention I've another 5 tomato plants in the potting shed.

    Thanks guys in advance

Wow - sounds like you two have made a really good start.

I wouldn't worry what the books say - we are most of us way behind this year due to the cold wet spell when it should have been sunny and dry.

Courgettes and squash in a polytunnel?? Mental, they'll end up like triffids.....you'll fit in well here!

Seriously though, if I were allowed to have a poly as big as yours on my allotment I reckon I'd grow just as many toms and have all the varieties under the sun. Why are we so obsessed with growing toms? Reckon we should set up Toms Anonymous......."hello my name is Vince and I'm addicted to growing tomatoes!"

In yours, I'd send the courgettes and squash outdoors next year and try some more exotic things indoors (if you like them) like melons, peppers, physalis, okra etc. Had some good success myself with normal old sweetcorn too, which Mrs Vince adores, so the poly provided her with some from early July, and now the outdoor stuff is just about ready. Alway good to keep SWMBO happy!

Enjoy the Vine, best forum I ever joined.

Hi I'm Feral - I find all the fun people are! I do like your attitude to watching the dvd and yelling out instructions to your hubby.
I have trouble throwing out things that are actually growing nicely too. Seems totally unfair. Bit like being forced to kill weeds on the farm in a drought - they are the only living things and you want me to kill them! Unfair!
