  • Very Little Knowledge

My lovely husband Dougie always insisted that outside was his job and inside was mine (no he wasn't a chauvanist - he shopped, cooked, help with the dishes did the decorating (with me assisting) and all sorts of other things)
    I digress - sorry.

Anyway he took very sick this time 2011 and I lost him early this year. So since he took sick, I have tried to have the garden how he had it. Its not a big garden and he wasn't a fanatic but had it nice and also tidy.

What I know about gardening would go on a postcard which is an improvement on 12 months ago but at least then I had Doug to ask what to do.

I tried Cauliflowers - they were a write off eaten and blown
The lettuce didn't grow at all.
    Still hope for the sprouts
    the leeks may be coming
    Cabbage - reasonable
Stawberries - 7 small ones but not all at once
Pears - nil (previous years have been good
Victoria Plums - enough but nowhere near previous years
    Beetroot 3 or 4 grew
    Peas - did ok
    Onions - 7 or 8
    Sping Onions - nil
Doug's Dahlias are a lovely show if not a bit crowded somehow

    So thats me - trying

Hello, and welcome to the madhouse! Sorry to hear of your loss, I'm sure your Hubby would be proud of your efforts at maintaining his garden. You'll be amazed at what info you'll find on this forum. There's a load of really experienced and knowledgeable people on here. There's also a few nutters, and those that are just here for the company.

Hello Lizzy and Welcome to the Forum. I'm truly sorry about your loss. I lost my husband quite quickly too so I know how difficult it is to turn your hand to everything. It comes with time and you adjust - but there are somethings I'll never be any good at - growing roses is one of them!
We've all had a difficult year in the garden, the weather has been so awful, so don't be disheartened - next year has to be better!!
This is a very friendly and supportive Forum - a bit crazy sometimes too Ask all the questions you like, someone will know the answer.
Would you like to add your location to your profile too as it helps us understand your local weather conditions.

With the weather how its been this year any crops from your garden have been a bonus, so like VC says don't give up and instead join the rest of us who are hoping next year will be better.

Hi Lizzy - so sorry to hear of your loss.

More consolation is that lots of fruit trees have performed badly this year - so fingers crossed next year will be better without any work from you at all.

And in all my years gardening, I've only ever managed one cauli that didn't blow. C'est la Vie.
