  • Greetings From Shandy In Ripley, Derbyshire

Hi, my name is Andy Sutton. I live in Ripley, Derbyshire. I have been growing fruit, damsons, apples, raspberries, red & black currants, since we moved into my current house almost 11 years ago and I took up growing vegetables in 2008. As we started a family a couple of years ago I needed to make some garden available for my son and so I put my name down for an allotment and was able to take one over in Feb 2012. Although I managed to get some crops in this year it hasn't been a big success due to the weather and the fact the allotment needs a fair bit doing to it (needs completely digging over, compost bins and water buts needed installing, hedge needed cutting by up to 9' in width etc.). I currently have a 5 year plan for the allotment and will generally be organic where I can. We bought in some hens about a month ago and are keeping them in the back garden. My intention is to get into seed saving and try and make my garden and allotment as self sufficient as possible. Poly tunnel and grrenhouse are on the list of things to buy as soon as money allows but at the moment I just have a single cold frame.
