  • Up to the allotment about 1130 today and got seed bed ready for broad beans; then it started to rain so break for soup and tea then put in broad beans and had a quick chat with neighbours before it started to rain again. Left early and will return this evening to set mousetraps - will hide them in some lengths of gutter friend Jim has provided

Returned with grandson's 1&2 and we cut the guttering into smaller pieces and set all 7 traps using the gutter as cover - we await the results

    • Horrible wet and windy weather for most of today - managed up the allotment with no.1 grandson for half an hour after early dinner to find 1 mouse caught and bait missing from 5 other traps. 2 of these are suspect but the others are brand new. All traps reset. Turned out a lovely evening but I was off playing an away chess match.

      • Two hours at the allotment this afternoon and planted 7 rows of potatoes - a mix of King Edward, Rooster and one row of Pink Fir Apple - weather sunny and warm apart from 2 short rain showers

        • Spent 4 hours at the allotment today planting some broad beans and provide a net enclosure to prevent rabbit access.

Returned this evening with eldest grandson to set mousetraps and do a little bit of weeding, a couple of docks showing through - grandson got the complete roots out.

Found a mole had tunnelled through/under the onion bed but none of the onions seem to have been damaged or dislodged - will check again tomorrow when we go up to sow some seeds and check daughter's new plot which has just been allocated.

          • Nearly 5 hours on the allotment today with eldest grandson doing some work on daughter's plot including clearing weed ridden area round rhubarb plant, planting new black currant bush offered by another plot holder, clearing weeds from round this bush and 3 adjacent bushes and building fire to dispose of some of the weeds.

Grandson had dug up a dock far longer than any previously excavated.

            • Jeezo, that's a beaut!

Do you hire him out to other plot holders to dig up their docks? You would make a mint

                  • Another 4 hours at the allotment today working on daughter's allotment after rain stopped until it started again - weather was really warm as was the work - I started with a fleece shirt and thermal vest and ended up with the vest - son in law who was doing the really heavy digging had a very light T shirt. Daughter dug out as many docks as she could find showing above ground. Grandsons had a ball - all 3 were digging and generally getting in the way.

Taff in the next door allotment turned up and expressed his delight that this allotment was finally being put to rights after 2 years neglect, and before any pc complaints are made, this is how he introduces himself - no one knows his real name. He then spent half an hour chatting and keeping me off the work - hope he turns up again tomorrow.

You are quite correct - I have always been lucky and as Churchill would have said:

'I will be rid of the couch grass in a year or so'

                        • Went up to the allotment about 1300 - weather was poor with cold winds but allotment is sheltered and 3 of my friends were there already, so by the time I started to work the sun had come out and it was shirt sleeve time. After a while Taff arrived so another chat ensued and most of the work was confined to after he left shortly after 1400, till about 1600 when I finished.

                            • Second trip after lunch from 1215 to 1600 when I continued the weeding we had started this morning - again gloriously sunny warm weather Taff showed up again for a chat and a quick check of his growing crops - he is returning tonight to water and feed his onions.
