  • Dotty,

Hope to get at least another two beds out of the wood I got left at the site entrance - took a bit of work to detach the boards from the posts and take out all the nails then cut out the bad bits but saved a fortune so well worth the effort involved - I had a good line and a lot of determination to get it straight

    • We've been advised to buy decking from B&Q, apparently scaffolding boards are now getting in short supply and often badly split and damaged, and expensive cos everyone with allotments is wanting them. We do have one I love that we made with wood re-claimed from river, that was a mission! I've decided to gave some on the really poor side of plot, stony, bricks, glass, etc, has given me potatoes for 2 years, but hard work, especially as I've now got a knee problem. Have put paths and chippings all round edge, and thought I could put stuff in bags/ containers of I need more space

Gosh I do sound organised, all in the head tho.

        • Hello again Shen. I will give you a wee quiz. Where I am was named in a poem by Robert Burns. I will give clues if required..
and thanks again for providing that answer for me, it satisfies my curiosity.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Thank you vegboi, did have a look, but nothing really, and as husband decided that B & Q, decking is easy to use,not expensive and he doesn't have much time, I'm happy for him to do whatever he can, he made one when first got plot, I don't want to complicate things, if you see what I mean!

I luv the reclaimed one he made, but was a bit dodgy getting it from river! Haha, then getting it home on his bike.

            • Sheneval, your plot is a credit to you, its so tidy it seems a shame to add plants and spoil it.

You are not in Crosbie Kirkyard by any chance?

                  Dotty,

Several of the neighbouring plots have scaffolding boards whereas one or two others have decking - the ones with decking look neater whereas the scaffolding boards give deeper beds though none of them are anyway near full - If/when I run out of wood I may well have a look for cheap decking boards to finish the rest of my beds. Good luck with your plans

                  • Bill,
That's just the first bed - I think I will have enough wood and woodchip to do two more - I'll see what tomorrow's weather brings though suspect it may be ok - the site is very muddy and moving the woodchip is a real chore due to it being very boggy underfoot - fortunately I have not lost my hill walking ability to keep my feet in slippy conditions although my agility levels are not what they were

Just returned from a chess championship match so I'm off for a bath to refresh the weary bones from today's efforts.

Robert Burns, mentions lots of places in Scotland, how about Loch Lomond?

                      • Dotty,

A bit further north that we are - more likely to be Ayr or even Prestwick which if memory serves, Burns dismissed as 'wild and windy wastes' or some such insult

Since my Hunters were Freemen of Prestwick I take that as a personal insult

You are correct I`m no in Crosbie Kikyard, but where I am Robert Burns conducted a transaction near a kirk yard. Thats the second clue.

                          • Spent nearly 6 hours at the allotment today in quite boggy conditions but still managed to get another 3 loads of woodchip and completed edging on another bed.

Robin appeared quite early on and I offered him the bird food had taken up but after
a brief inspection and a couple of nibbles he turned up his nose at this offering and hung around waiting for me to dig him up some worms which I duly did. Once again he had to fight off an intruder - otherwise he spent most of 4 hours watching my every move and listening to me giving a running commentary at I was doing - I did offer him a handheld worm at one stage and he seemed to be tempted but thought better of it so waited impatiently until I dropped it on the ground in front of his nose.

Had a long chat with a neighbouring plot holder who was tidying up his plot

Has to be Ayr Auld Kirk as depicted in The Holy Fair

                              • A quick trip to the allotment via the Council dump where I picked up 2 70L bags of compost in exchange for vouchers given for plastic bottle disposal. One of the bags was a Levington MPC Waterlock System, (a new one on me), presumably discarded and put in with the recycled stuff.
