New Allotment

I'm going to hold off until the last weekend of March - just to give me a bit more time to tidy the allotment up and make a few more preparations and then I'll be at it, can't wait and I'll probably be using this thread as a reference for some things!

Was up today for 3.5 hours and got the bed ready for the peas - Saturday looks to be wet so I'll probably wait till Sunday before I put anything in. If this winter had been anything like last winter I'd be holding off too but I want to make successional sowings so will start off carrots and beetroot early and then sow more in a few weeks - I'll be putting these under cover as I did last year when t worked very well - no carrot fly problems at all.

Picked some more rhubarb today and gave it to my daughter - she tells me that what I picked yesterday is selling at £4 in the shops, so amount I gave her is worth about £6 and there is a lot more to come - good grief - next year I'll put two plants under the bin

My daughter, 2nd grandson and myself put in pea seeds today into her legume bed.

I carried out minor repairs on my raised bed and got it ready for sowing carrots and beetroot tomorrow. Will also put in peas.

Nice day on the plot today although sun only made a brief appearance

Over 5 hours at the plot today - put 220 peas in the legume bed and put carrots and beetroot in the raised bed. photos to follow.

My rhubarb crown is normally early (certainly compared to other plotters at the Hill), but is only just showing buds. Amazing what a difference forcing the crowns makes.

I was surprised at how quick my rhubarb came this year - the plant I covered was on a par with the others I have when I did so. My daughter's and Jim's are the same as yours and they were both very large last year. I did cover mine with manure at the end of the year but suspect it may be because they are younger plants.

I remember my stepmother used to cover hers with a tin pail - I'm sure she actually took it out the ground before she did so and believe the farmed forced rhubarb we currently get in the shops is now grown on concrete floors in sheds but I may be wrong

3.5 hours at the allotment today getting a bed ready for planting on Jim's sister's plot - he asked me tot do one bed whilst he did another so she could keep the plot going. This was followed by 3 in the garden scarifying and cutting the grass assisted by my 3 grandsons although middle one disappeared quickly to do his homework - other 2 scarified, raked up the moss and put it in bags all 7 of them - I added another 3 with the grass cuttings.

3 hours at the allotment today - put in some fish, blood & bone in the onion beds and showed some of the children from the local nursery school the tadpoles in my grandkid's plot.

The teacher would like an allotment on the site they could attend on a regular basis so gave her the contact details and will be on hand for their visit next Wednesday to put some seeds in pots

Eldest grandson and myself put in 2 gooseberry bushes today with plenty of compost in the planting hole.

Put in two rows of potatoes today plus 5 dahlia tubers. weather was lovely.
