  • Hello from Devon

Hi, I have just joined this site after reading about it in the magazine, I along with my daughter took on our first allotment last year, it was an interesting year ( the weather) and we managed to grow a few things on half our plot, We aren't very experienced at growing veg so I have joined here hopefully to pick up some tips. We really enjoyed our first year and learning as we went along, this year we are hoping to expand on last years results and get the whole plot up and running
I also like to garden but don't have many plants left due to my other hobby of keeping chickens, I adopted some exbatt girls nearly 2 years ago and also last year bought a couple of pol hens from a local breeder, I am totally in love with my hens they are so
funny and friendly ( especially if there is food involved) I became a vegetarian after getting my hens so growing our own would be really useful in our household

I hope to meet like minded people here who's brains I can pick about growing veg

    Hello crazychickenlady, welcome.

I am new too and have to say the forum is fantastic and the people very friendly. Some serious amount of knowledge on here!
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

And she's a crazy vege chicken as well!

I'm just an aussie nutter. Your chickens could come in handy tho - lady down the road has her chickens fenced around the vege garden and before this season she let them in to the garden and threw out a bit of feed and they dug her garden over, and removed most of the weeds for her. Then she dropped some sheep poo in there and said they did an excellent job of digging that in for her as well! Now she's finding there's too much nitrogen for the broccoli tho, so maybe put them in the non-nitrogen rich garden beds.

I have chooks but they don't free range very far. Trying to teach them to be brave and venture out, but the rooster is such a chicken!

Hello and welcome from the French Pyrenees.

Which bit of Devon? I spent eight happy years in Plymouth, the best bit was by far getting out of the city.... Oh, and the RSC at the Theatre Royal. Long time ago.

              Happy forumating.

I was born down the road in Devonport, I lived in Plymouth as a baby toddler. It's a bit rough now, like a lot of places, including the one I've ended up in. What is it with me and rough coastal towns?
