Oh I forgot to mention. We have 3 Cockerels too many out of the 26 chickens we have and we need rid of them as the big cockerel we have is after them every day so if there is anyone round the Huntly area that would want 1 of them or all please PM me. My farmer neighbor says I should just ring their necks but I'm not a killer of animals so I thought best to sell them on. We are only looking for £ 5 each which will pay for more feed for them. If you need pics I can get or if you can wait till I get home next week u can come look. Cheers! Colin

No I'm not Vegetarian. I just don't have the heart to kill anything. I work overseas in a Muslim country and every July / August they have a celebration called Layeed. (Not the correct spelling.) It's a Sacrifice day and Millions of sheep get sacrificed across the country. In all Muslim countries. Each family buys a sheep and on that day they cut it's throat. All the family is involved including the kids. To me it's Barbaric. They do it at the base here and on the rig. Whenever I am here I take no part in it and I do not even want to witness it. They surround the sheep then slash it's throat. Nasty business. I always retire to my room and put my headphones on.

I'm a meat eater but I do not want to see the animal being killed.

I saw on another forum someone who made their own Polytunnel. Nice and cheap and sturdy. They used Broom handles hammered into the ground at an approximate depth of 2 feet. Then for the hoops they used blue alkathene water pipe to join the broom handles. Quite an ingenious way of building one. Plastic can be bought from one of the Polytunnel suppliers. Or from B&Q as long it is thick enough. This is something I think I will try myself. The trestles inside I can also build myself. Before I bought this house and land I wasn't involved a lot in DIY. Now I'm doing it every day. I've built shelters for the goats using old sheep feeders I bought from the farmer next door. I have put fencing round the sand school. Although because of the horses habit of rubbing against the posts and putting their heads between the planks I'm forever replacing and fixing bits on it! I built another Chicken coup and an area for the ducks. Sheesh! It keeps me going! And now I have given myself the Polytunnel project.

Yikes! Why do I do that to myself? lol

Oh there's a thing, it's not just cockerels we have going it's eggs as well. Duck eggs and Chicken eggs if anyone wants. They are very tasty. Lovely orange yolks. When my wife bakes with these eggs the sponge is an orangey color and not pale cream like cakes bought in the shop.

So with the help of this forum and the people here I hope to get to a stage where I can feed my family and animals with little cost and with clean vegetables and fruits. Maybe even make some free booze!! lol Always handy when the Robin Hood Government is thinking up more ways to rip us off.

So thanks again for the welcomes. Hope we can help one another along the way. The Government won't do it as they help themselves but we can help each other.

                          Cheers!!

                          Colin

Well I have bought a Poly Tunnel. It's up and ready to go. It's from KMS Direct. Not the best but at 6 m x 3 m x 2 m it will do just nicely. Just setting up the grow areas now and waiting for some plastic to come in for the base. Got a tip from my farmer neighbor to use the tubs from Cattle and sheep mineral tubs for growing tatties. Anyone else use them?
