    Good Morning

myself and my partner have just taken over an allotment. we are total novices at this however when I advised the man who runs the allotments that my only experience of growing veg is in tubs he was not fazed at all. he told us there are lots of other people on the site that will be willing to help us.

I will be browsing this forum on a regular basis for help as well if that's ok. I will apologise now if I ask what may seem like a totally dumb question but like I say we've never done anything like this before.

we officially start tending the allotment on 26th April so will take some photos then and will continue to take before and after shots - I promise not the bore you all to tears that much with photos.

    thanks for reading

Hello Nik & Phil and welcome Growing veg on an allotment is just like growing in a tub - just a very large tub So don't be overwhelmed by size, just take it in manageable chunks! Have a good read on here before you start - there's lot of advice for new allotment growers

Welcome to the Vine. Could you add your location (nearest town) to your profile please? Helps a lot when giving advice as climate conditions vary such a lot.

                Hi folks,

Welcome to the forum. They are a friendly bunch on here and are very helpful with advice.

Don't worry about asking dumb questions. There us actually no such thing as a dumb question, as it is a problem you don't know how to solve, or seeking advice. I have asked a load of basic questions since joining and the combined knowledge on here has already made me a more enthusiastic gardener who is far more knowledgeable than I ever was.

Take plenty of photos so you can amaze yourself with how much you've done.

Divide and conquer too. Mark it up into sections and don't try to do too much at once else you'll ache too much to go again. Cover areas with cardboard or tarps until you can get to them. Get something planted ASAP too.

thanks guys. the plot we have is covered in what my mum called groudsell ..... the soil is really lovely condition and isn't going to really need much work. the place has a hard base ready for either a shed or small greenhouse (on my wish list at the moment).

we are going to try potatoes, carrots, onions, green beans, broad beans etc but obviously not all at the same time.

I am going to plot the allotment on paper and plan what I am going to plant with what. this needs to work for us so i'm going to try and do it properly.

thanks again for all your help and I sure will take loads of photos and post them on here. I have started a blog as well which I will use as a type of diary for our allotment.

Hello and welcome Nik & Phil
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
