Hi we are Ken & Joanne who have just taken on an allotment 'Abbots Plot' in Lisburn, NI. Our plot will be ready on Tuesday & we are looking forward to getting started. We've taken on a 20x20 plot with the view to extend it next year. It's a privately run allotment with a great mix of young & old. We've horse manure on site at no extra charge. We've bought a wee plastic greenhouse for our garden to start seeds off & a water butt for the plot. I've read loads of books from the library & to be honest still feel quite lost. We're hoping to put in sprouts, onions & lettuce next week as they're small plants & can go straight into the ground. Any hints, tips, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😃

Hello and welcome.
Take the time between now and Tuesday to read the Vine as it is full of good stuff. And try not to be side-tracked by the nutters and cake.
Take loads of photos before you do anything so you can then see what you are (hopefully) achieving.
Enjoy.Le Sarramea https://jgsgardening.blogspot.com/

Croeso i'r Vine.
I would say choose one book and stick to it to begin with. If you haven't found one yet try Joy Larkcom Grow Your Own Vegetables
A garden calendar on a sheet - the sort you often get free with magazines - is also quite useful for an at a glance of what to sow and how long it should take yo be ready to harvest. Don't get too bogged down in rotation to start with it will make more sense as you get more experience and you can have a bit of a honeymoon on it in the first 12-18 months as you don't know what was there before."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."
PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

Hello and welcome to the forum! Lisburn is a lovely place, I have many fond memories of Northern Ireland, unfortunately most of my sight seeing was done from the back of a 'Snatch Land Rover'.
Good luck with your plot Ken & Joanne.Hey farmer farmer put away the D.D.T. Now give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees please!

Welcome to the vine Ken and Joanne, you'll find lots of useful advice here, and loads of folk ready and willing to answer questions from the very basic to the really complicated and advanced, and not just on gardening, check out all the forum sections. It's a good idea to have a wander round the allotments and see what everyone else is growing. It'll give you an idea of what grows well where you are, and what to be planting now.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
Endless wonder.
